I came upon this female figure on the corner of 14th and West. Her eye glasses were knocked off. Thought she was dead and called an ambulance. Went into a nearby apartment building and told the doorman. He said -- Oh, she came in earlier. She was really drunk --. (could she be a casuality of the Rusty Knot?)

Changing populations in many neighborhoods create some very interesting juxtapositions. Old style Irish Pub next to a Boutique with Arabic signage and group of Muslim women walking by - note the woman on the right is wearing a tartan plaid jacket as though she has a foot in both worlds and it's possible that she does.
Today is Park(ing) Day, and 50 parking spots in New York City are taken over and turned into Park Spots instead. The sponsoring groups - this is all legal, with police permits and everything - come rolling out and provide sod and overhead organizing, and beyond that each park is left pretty much to the people who put it together.
I start at Stay-cation Park, and come back later on to see how things are going. From across Court Street - there's heavy traffic all day on Court, and I wait a bit before there's an unobstructed view - it's clear that the park is attracting plenty of attention. The Scrabble game is still in session at right, with a few seats swapped out for new players; at left a busy group has finished with Boggle and is playing something else under the umbrella; in middle ground, Paco is getting athletic as he wins a round of Twister.
My take on the Park(ing) Day is pretty much this: on an ordinary day, this parking space would serve a couple of cars for a couple of hours each. It would be invisible, one small part of the river of cars that flows through the city day and night. Today it serves 50 or so people who lounge on the grass, take off their shoes, grab some snacks, play a game or two of this or that, and meet and talk and pass a pleasant minute or hour or two. Hundreds more stop as they pass and ask what on earth is happening; most are intrigued, some just shake their heads and move on.
This is a great way to start us all thinking about how we use our public space, and maybe how we could use it better.

This site has been boarded up for a long time, in November I took a photo at this same place - it showed a mural covered by graffitti, this time only the bottom part of the wall remains, the rest of the wall and the entire building has been torn down. I wonder what will be replacing it.

My neighborhood has two Park(ing) Spots, and after a relaxing stretch down on Court Street I mosey over the Henry Hicks Park on Montague Street to see what the competition is up to.
Henry Hicks Park is put together by a few architecture students, and they have set out a little homemade blue fence, painted spool reels for sitting and playing, and bunches of yellow and purple flowers.
A few young moms are playing with their toddlers, and there isn't nearly as much street traffic as down at Stay-cation Park, which gives it less of a Wacky New Yorkers feel. We talk about NYC and cities far and wide, about the Hagia Sophia, which I've seen, and La Sagrada Familia by Gaudí, which I haven't. Just behind me, out of frame in this picture, is a small fenced-in area for dogs, with water and dry food and toys.
We're about to get discovered by a passing horde of high school kids, who take over one end of the park and shriek and play and giggle and howl. "I love this!" they cry, again and again, stopping at one point for a heavy round of applause for the organizers.
The pocket parks border hard on the street, but they really feel apart from passing traffic - it's the greening that plays on the senses, I reckon.
At many places in San Francisco and around the world thurs, parks were being created in parking spaces.

What is change, but a subtle documentation of the changing of the light? This beauty appeared out of no where and the lighting was just right at the 2008 Mermaid Parade. She showed the ephemeral, changing beauty of that careful afternoon light at Coney Island. May I continue to dream of afternoon mermaids.
For the past several years I've been photographing in the Manhattanville area under the Riverside Drive Viaduct now changing daily as Columbia University buys out the old meatpackers and expands its campus.
Once while I was photographing from around this spot, a sidewalk art critic asked me why so many people photograph this structure, so I said that I thought it was a beautiful and historic structure worth photographing. Then he asked me why there needed to be so many photographs of this one place, and I said that each person sees it differently and the neighborhood is constantly changing, there are vehicles and people moving through the space, and the light changes from moment to moment. As Columbia develops this area, it will be radically different in the next ten to twenty years. Midtown Packing on the left side of the frame was already surrounded by scaffolding when I was in the neighborhood , and the tire repair shop to its right has been moved out.
While I was making this photograph, 23 August 2003 (the print was made in 2004), painter Rackstraw Downes was set up across the street from me working on a huge canvas spread across two easels.
