oops! I forgot to take a "back" photo --- I used the Alexander Henry pears and apples (same as the rug below) with a row of extra 2.25-inch blocks, sashed in white.
from my mom's recipe
1/2 c (vegan) butter, softened
1 c (vegan) sugar
2 tbsp arrowroot powder
1/4 c soy or rice milk (plus a little extra)
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 c flour
2 tsp b powder
1/2 tsp mace
1/2 tsp salt
mix butter and sugar together before adding arrowroot, milk, and vanilla. stir in flour, b powder, and mace, and 1/2 tsp salt. add extra milk as needed for desired consistency (should be a workable dough). chill dough 1 hour. roll dough to 1/8 - 1/4 inch thick and cut. cook at 375 F on ungreased cookie sheet. 7 - 8 min for thin cookies, 10 - 12 min for thick cookies.
yield: 4 - 4 1/2 dozen thin, 3 dozen thick

Spotted as I was talking with my sister-in-law, niece and nephew on the sidewalk in front of our house. It flew up into an oak tree a few houses down to dine on a small bird.
