I might claim I was actually blogging in 2000 during a 6 month sabbatical where I posted regular commentary, links, and photos on what I was doing as I traveled New Zealand and Australia:
And I did this the 1.0 way- no blog software, just hand coded HTML! 10 miles of hacking tags through the snow.
It worked for me because I loved hand coding HTML. But it rang home a point why blog software is important for educators and students. rather then worriying about tags, and links, and syntax and uploading by ftp... they can just concentrate on the content, not the technology.
