It's been a long time since I've seen an owl. I remember seeing one sitting on a fence when I was a kid and I was absolutely mesmerized. Mom told me not to get too close so I kept my distance. I've seen a couple since then but none that I was able to get a good look at (much less get a photo of!).
Now to present day, I discovered Muscatatuck last year after seeing some really cool nature shots from other flickr friends. Every time I saw someone post a snap of an owl I've been jealous. I've looked high and low and even researched owl spotting tips on google. No luck. Until last weekend.
It was my last trip around the auto tour. I was exhausted and had already spent several hours taking photos in the cold. That moment is when I spotted something out of the corner of my eye. I looked behind me and couldn't believe my eyes. This owl was sitting in a tree right next to the road. It wasn't even startled by me taking photos of it from the car. It just sat there, took a little glance at me, looked around a few times and then rested its eyes. And I snapped away. 📷

(I also spotted a screech owl on this trip as well, which I'll post at a later time! Two owls in one day. 😁 )

Took this photo on a brisk and beautiful January 2018 day right before sundown. The canyon walls create immense, graphic shadows at late day. I was blessed to find this spot where the last rays of sun were reflecting off winter's bare trees, creating an unusual Grand Canyon composition. Sometimes high contrast can be a positive, albeit difficult to photograph.
