The bladder was packed with stones that had formed over several months. There was barely any room for urine - no wonder the dog was so uncomfortable! Once we got the stones out, the bladder was still very thick and enlarged. The bladder wall (normally only millimeters in thickness) was about 1/2 inch thick. The inflammation should resolve with continued antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment. It will probably take several more weeks. Hopefully, we can prevent the recurrence of stones with careful diet planning.

Kirby came back home this morning. His surgery for removal of bladder stones yesterday was a success. He's on pain meds & antibiotics for the next week and will have to monitored for swelling & discharge. He was really happy to see me at the vet's and rewarded me with a nice steady stream of urine when we got out of the door. That's my boy!

The two large stones fit together tightly (see the x-ray) with the other stones fitted around them. There are several hundred stones here (look closely for the tiny ones) and several got flushed away during surgery.

Refrigerate, remove whole from can, slice thinly, cut into bite size pieces and bake in a 350 degree oven for 40min (time variable depending on thickness and desired crispness). Leave in the cooling oven overnight to dehydrate for longer storage. They make a nice treat for dogs who are on a restricted Hill's(TM) diet (U/D, G/D. K/D. L/D, etc.)

Mercury did not care for the Hill's U/D diet. I switched him to Royal Canin SO and he likes that much better. The SO makes for good cookies too!
