This was taken at the beautiful and unspoiled beach at Stokksnes in Iceland. It’s known for its incredible black lava dunes and is overlooked by the mountain of Vestrahorn. I could easily have spent a few days here just photographing the beach in the ever changing conditions created by the enigmatic Icelandic weather. So many places to visit, so little time to do it (sigh)

Vik, Iceland. Black beach in the "town" of Vik. 300 inhabitants roughly and around 70 km to the next "town".
Vestrahorn, Iceland. I have been meaning to try this one in black and white for a while. What do you think? I think my old camera was pushed to the extreme in the low light. I'd be happy to hear any tips on reducing the noise.
Sometimes called the Ice Beach, sometimes the Diamond Beach it was a fascinating place to visit especially at this time of year when the sun barely makes it above the horizon.

I don't think I have ever been in as much pain taking photographs. The wind was positively whipping across the black sand dunes and getting everywhere, including in my zipped up camera bag! It was when it got in the eyes it hurt the most and I had glasses on!

We arrived at Vestrahorn in the late afternoon just after a dusting of snow. The sky was a white/gray, which made me worry about what the shot would look like. The last time I was here in January of 2020, we had a spectacular sunrise, but the sunset on this day was set to be underwhelming. I was fortunate to grab this shot just before the clouds rolled in and obscured the mountains. Pretty otherworldly and very lucky. 20220116 Vestrahorn 11b

Vestrahorn mountain seen just beyond the bay between it and the Skokksnes peninsula. The peak and the clouds around it are illuminated by golden dawn light.
One of the notable features of the Stokksnes peninsula is the dunes formed by the black volcanic beach sand and topped with golden grasses. This is a scene I was particularly eager to see on my trip to Iceland, and I was not disappointed.

another one from cold, windy but beautiful Reynisfjara beach near Vik, Iceland. On the beach were these impressive polygonal basalt columns forming a wall against the black sand beach and a huge cave around the corner
