I call this guy "Blackbeard" after the pirate.

He is an apparently older Male Northern Cardinal who looks as though he has had a rather interesting life. (Notice his beak)

He has a black beard, a broken beak and a "Rough Life" appearance. All he needs is a peg leg, and an "Eye Patch".

All things considered he seems to be doing very well.

He is also one of my Yard Birds.

I've had a run in with this chap before. But yesterday there was no contest. I was there very early and found 17 males having a lie in on a slate slope looking straight up the Llanberis Pass. I wandered amongst them the only thing hindering me being I couldn't get on the other side of them as the slate heap fell away so steeply. I did try but the slate started to breakaway in a grey avalanche I didn't fancy riding to the bottom and I scrabbled back to the top again whilst the goats chuckled to themselves about my lack of mobility on the scree. Bastard goats!

Anyhow, these lazy beasts, I could have fought any of the them and won.

Okay, okay, enough with the Harris's, I know! I am so drawn to them because I know that I may never see them here again after they depart. This one is the most mature (has the blackest mask) of the four.... With snow over the next few days, it will be a while before I'll know whether they decide to stick around into the New Year or not....

Edward Teach was a privateer in the Caribbean, then a pirat and became particularly famous for the burning fuses he used to tie into his long beard before a battle.

His flaggship was the " Queen Anne's Revenge". Enjoy!

I've been photographing these guys long enough to be able to name at least two of the four. This fella is the most distinctive. I've gone back through my Flickr posts and applied his moniker where it's clearly him....

I thought I was done with the birds of the BPile.... On this late afternoon, however, with Blackbeard putting on a show with the Ponderosa pines in the background, I was smitten all over again.

Two different perches in the set and three different poses. I have four more shots of him left to post, but I'll save them for another day.

Since this shoot, I've also seen each of the other four, but always separately....

"...Springer’s Point Preserve on Ocracoke Island is the perfect spot to spend the morning bird watching or the afternoon hiking and sitting on the beach overlooking the Pamlico Sound. This tranquil Preserve was opened to the public on May 20, 2006 and encompasses more than 120 acres of maritime forest, tidal red cedar forest, salt marsh, wet grasslands and sound front beach. You’ll pass ancient, gnarled live oaks as you make your way along winding trails to the sandy beach overlooking the infamous Teach’s Hole. Designated as one of the state’s significant natural heritage areas because of its unique maritime forest and importance to colonial water birds, the Preserve enjoys a cultural history as vibrant as the array of plant and bird species it supports. This site, historically referred to as “Teach’s Plantation”, is the reputed favorite haunt of the legendary pirate, Blackbeard, who marauded, eluded capture and finally met his fate at Teach’s Hole, off Springer’s Point." coastallandtrust.org

"Springer's Point Nature Preserve is only accessible by foot or bicycle, and parking is prohibited on the road and private driveways. The trail and reserve are owned and operated by the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust. Encompassing more than 120 acres, the preserve is home to maritime forest, tidal red cedar forest, salt marsh, wet grasslands, and sound-front beach.

In 1718, the pirate Blackbeard camped in this area in the days leading up to his defeat and death. The water off Springer's Point-called Teach's Hole-is known to be where the final battle between Blackbeard and the British Royal Navy occurred. Now, a pleasant stroll through the maritime forest leads out to views of Ocracoke Inlet and Cape Lookout National Seashore beyond." nps.gov

Legend says that Captain Blackbeard used to tie lit fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies, but in reality, he just never noticed that his beard had caught on fire.
