A Bistro is a small place to eat and drink wine. In its original Parisian version, a bistro is a small restaurant. It serves moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting. Bistros are defined mostly by the foods they serve. Home cooking with robust earthy dishes, and slow-cooked foods like cassoulet are typical. By using stews and cassoulets they could cook the main food and it would last all day.
The origins of the word bistro are uncertain. Some say that it may derive from the Russian bystro (быстро), "quickly". It entered the French language during the Russian occupation of Paris in 1814. Russian officers or cossacks who wanted to be served quickly would shout "bystro." However, this etymology is not accepted by several French linguists, as there is, notably, no occurrence of this word until the end of the 19th century Others say the name comes from a type of aperitif, called a bistrouille (or liqueur coffee), served in some reasonably priced restaurants

The vibrant red tin roof of the Bistro 1640 and Auberge du Trésor complex is lovely in day or night (and it really is that bright!).
The wooden Christmas tree in the foreground is on display for the German Christmas Market, which is currently happening in Old Quebec.
"The architectural complex comprising the Auberge du Trésor and the Bistro 1640 rests on a site of remarkable historical richness. From 1740, a half-timbered house located at the corner of Ste-Anne and Du Trésor streets became the only permanent home of the French regime in New France. It was known as the home of the Compagnie des Cent-associés, a company of 100 shareholders mandated by Richelieu, of which the illustrious Samuel de Champlain was a member.
This company was granted the monopoly of all trade in perpetuity and the monopoly of the fur trade for 15 years. In return, the company undertook to administer the colony, to install 4,000 settlers, to defend the territory, and to devote itself to the conversion of the Indians. It is therefore this society that made possible the departure of the great adventure of New France. In 1713, Jean Lerouge, king's surveyor, erected a two-story stone house there; certain walls and arches of the inn are vestiges of it.
The Auberge du Trésor is now installed there to offer visitors to the old capital a warm experience combined with the charm of a "boutique hotel" and the romanticism of this historic building."

This, too, was taken back in 2017. My youngest daughter and I had just left that morning to start our drive across to college--from Washington to Oklahoma! Quite the drive!
Anyway, we stopped for lunch at this little bistro, Picabu Neighborhood Bistro, located in South Hill, Spokane. They were so good, they actually made the list for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives! It had opened in 2005, quickly becoming a go-to spot for anyone craving fresh, creative dishes. Sadly, they closed their doors in 2018.
This, however, caught my eye while we were dining at this little bistro, and although I can't say who painted this little gem, I did think it was quite creative.

This "Bistro" photograph was made in one of my favorite towns, Saint Helena, which is in the Napa Valley, CA. If I still lived in California, that is the town in which I would want to live! I love the red and white striped awnings and table for two. It feels very European to me, as well. Sit down and have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine... On June 23, 2019, The Madison Historical Society's 6th Annual Tour of Remarkable Homes of 5 unique Madison Properties was held from 11 to 4. See flic.kr/s/aHsmDYR4zd for more scenes from this event.
The 1897 Swiss chalet-style home known as “Oakledge” was named for an ancient oak tree that once grew on the property. Designed by Madison architect A. B. Willard for George and Mary Wilcox, the house was built on an estate that originally encompassed all the land on both sides of Island Avenue from the Boston Post Road to the Sound.
The home was considered the cultural center of Madison for decades. Constance Wilcox, the only child of George and Mary, founded one of the nation’s first summer theater groups, which performed in an open space behind the home (flic.kr/s/aHskneEi5Q). Many charitable events, club meetings, and social gatherings — including Constance’s wedding to an Italian prince — were also held on the grounds.
The nearly 3,500-square-foot home is the perfect blend of old and new. A generous wraparound mahogany porch and original casement windows with diamond-shaped panes add to the charm of the house.
The eat-in kitchen has a French bistro flair, with its white tile backsplash and brass and glass shelves mounted above its sink. Dramatic landscaping improvements complete the refreshed scene here. The owners removed several trees to provide more sunlight; they installed a fieldstone patio with comfortable seating surrounding a fire pit; and they built a potting shed for garden tools. The history of Madison is intertwined with the history of Oakledge.

Lovely little chairs, very decorative in the garden, but I know I do not want to sit on any of them. We use those 'bistro chairs' to put plants on.

Or rather, a tiny fraction of our spread. I don't even really remember what the main dish photographed was but as always, our food here was very good. Also with a large group, their seating arrangements were better as we got a round table, which helped with conversation.
I'm lucky to work for a company where we go out to dinner at places like this instead of the Rainforest Café.
