Andean Motmot (formerly known as Highland Motmot) is a species of the Andes Mountains of South America, found from central Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru into a small part of western Bolivia. They are beautifully colourful birds, with a racquet-tipped tail (seen off to the side in this image). As this photo shows, they also have powerful serrated mandibles. This individual was seen near Aguas Calientes, the Peruvian town close to the famous Inca site of Machu Picchu.

Versicolored Emerald - it is a small species of Amazilia hummingbird. It is discontinuously distributed in open habitats of eastern South America, from Colombia east to the Guianas and south to northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil. This is a medium-sized hummingbird with green upperparts and white underparts; the mostly pink mandible helps to distinguish it from the very similar White-chested Emerald (Amazilia chionopectus). There are six subspecies of Versicolored Emerald, which vary in features such as the color of the crown (glittering green or turquoise) and throat (white, or variably green or turquoise). One poorly-known subspecies, rondoniae of southwestern Brazil (and northern Bolivia?), sometimes is recognized as a separate species, but geographic variation within Versicolored Emerald merits further study. Across its broad range, the Versicolored Emerald behaves as a typical Amazilia: it occurs at the edges of forest, in open shrubby areas, and in savannas with scattered trees or shrubs. Versicolored Emeralds feed at a wide variety of flowers; they may defend small patches of flowers, but also visit flowering trees, which attract many hummingbirds of a variety of species. This male Green-winged Teal showed smartly at Niven Lake, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. With a reflection as a bonus… Despite its small size, this species breeds to treelimit and even farther north in the High Arctic of North America.
A young American Avocet must quickly learn to find food on its own and this one was foraging actively, albeit with the protective presence of a parent. (In this case, the adult is the male as determined by the slightly upturned bill — that feature is strongly curved in females.) This endearing scene unfolded at Weed Lake near Langdon in southern Alberta, Canada.
The female House Sparrows in my garden seem to get on very well and as a rule do not often fight These two males seem to think it is their duty every time they see each other to have a very loud and public battle . Showing off in front of the girls I suspect !
House Sparrow are still a common bird in Uk in gardens parks and around farms . They feed on grain buds and scraps . They are listed as a red list species which means they at serious risk. In the last 15 years the House Sparrow population in London has dropped by almost 70% and they are now completely absent from many city centers
