The Sword-billed Hummingbird is a charismatic species from Andean South America. It is found from Venezuela and Colombia in the north to Bolivia in the south. The species belongs to a monotypic genus, Ensifera, and is quite different from all other hummingbirds; metallic green and bronzed overall, with a black bill that is slightly upcurved and longer than the body length. This is the only bird species with a bill length that exceeds the body length. When seen perched, the species usually holds its bill quite upright, presumably because of balance issues stemming from this long and relatively heavy structure.

What was the Presbyterian Campgrounds ( now managed by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy .... the folks who have TWO photo enforced stop signs in the park, and recently raised the parking fee from $8 to $10. Parking was free before they took over) has been a pretty good place to bird watch. There is a creek that has water year round.

W9 and I had a lot of fun trying to photograph a few Wrentits. They are known for their "bouncing ball" call. At times they rattle. I think we are getting better at making the ID of a bird, even if the call is only a rattle.

Merlin

The Merlin (Falco columbarius) is a small species of Falcon from the Northern Hemisphere, with numerous subspecies throughout North America and Eurasia. A bird of prey once known colloquially as a Pigeon Hawk in North America, the Merlin breeds in the northern Holarctic; some migrate to subtropical and northern tropical regions in winter. Males typically have wingspans of 21–23 inches, with females being slightly larger. They are swift fliers and skilled hunters who specialize in preying on small birds in the size range of sparrows to quail. The Merlin has for centuries been well regarded as a Falconry Bird. In recent decades Merlin populations in North America have been significantly increasing, with some Merlin’s becoming so well adapted to city life that they forgo migration.
