The town of La Conner - a small fishing town in northwest Washington has a flock of wild turkeys that walk down main street every morning at 7am.

They feed on the ornamental cabbage in front of people's stores, waddle thru town and go back up the hill.

In October of 2007 I discovered this picture was stolen, modified, and resold as someone elses work. Subsequent legal action resolved the matter to my satisfaction.

A charming cockatiel perches gracefully on a wooden tree trunk inside a outskirt park .The weather was so cold and misty that I couldn't get a clear shot....

Its soft, pale grey feathers contrast beautifully with the brilliant yellow crest that fans upward from its head, giving it an expressive and regal appearance. Bright orange cheek patches add a splash of warmth to its face, highlighting its alert, curious eyes.

A beautiful European Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) in its natural habitat. With its striking red crown, dark eye mask, and olive-green plumage, this bird is a true gem for wildlife photographers. Captured while foraging on the ground, where it primarily feeds on ants.

The “Grey Ghost” is the nickname for the adult male Northern Harrier (Circus hudsonius)

Coppers Hawk (Astur cooperii)

Fun Fact: The scientific name for the Cooper’s Hawk is currently recognized as Astur cooperii, though it was historically known as Accipiter cooperii; recent genetic studies moved it to the genus Astur from Accipiter due to evolutionary findings, classifying it as a type of goshawk

Haven't been able to go out much...

Found these owls on Sunday at Mercy Hot Springs, in California's central valley, where they spend the winters. INCREDIBLY well hidden in a small grove of pine trees. To find them you ask the owner of the springs and she says that grove over there. Then in typical owl hunting fashion, you hunt, and hunt, and hunt, and...

This owl was unfazed by my constant camera chatter and allowed me to come within 20 feet of it.

Texas Cardinals have something special in their water - they are CONSIDERABLY brighter than their east coast counterparts. I had to reduce the saturation in the red to bring out the detail - even though the picture was slightly underexposed!

The green branch in the background belongs to a mesquite tree.

Thank you everyone for your very kind comments. I need to do a shameless plug here. This was taken at the Martin Ranch in Edinburg, Texas in the lower Rio Grande Valley. Audrey and John Martin make their living by conserving the ranch - restoring the habitat to its original native state, and making it a wonderful place for birders and bird photographers. If you're in Texas please visit them - the usual end-of-life alternative for ranches, another housing tract or shopping center can be prevented by your support of ecotourism.

Woo-hoo! Life bird!

This is a most unusual bird in our area. It kept getting spotted in random places but I wasn't able to find it. Lately, though, it seems to have finally settled down to one territory where it can be reliably found. So Yamil Saenz and I went out and found it. Thank you sir! :-)

I am amazed how close its call is to the Lazuli Bunting.

I thought Lazuli's were amazing birds. The photo does not do this gentleman justice. Amazing blues. I suppose I'm ready for a Painted Bunting now. :-)

For Feathery-Friday - lazy crazy hazy - "crazy as a loon" Friday.

The Old World flycatchers are a large family, the Muscicapidae, of small passerine birds mostly restricted to the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). These are mainly small arboreal insectivores, many of which, as the name implies, take their prey on the wing. The family includes 324 species and is divided into 51 genera.

A female Common Blackbird (Turdus merula) perched on a mossy chimney under a clear blue sky. Unlike the pitch-black male, the female has a more modest brown plumage – a quiet, yet equally beautiful presence among European songbirds.

A small group of Common Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) perching on an old, moss-covered tiled roof. Their wet feathers highlight the iridescent sheen of their plumage, revealing subtle greens and purples. Even on a grey day, starlings manage to bring sparkle and life to the scene.

A Red-headed Woodpecker pauses momentarily on a gnarled pine branch deep in a sunlit forest. Its vivid crimson head contrasts sharply against the soft greens of the blurred woodland backdrop, highlighting nature’s bold design. Captured in a moment of stillness, the bird becomes both sentinel and spectacle on its natural stage.

Have you ever seen a prettier bird?

Apologies for not note-ing that this bird comes from the San Diego Zoo. Flickr has been acting poorly all morning and many of my edits never made it. :-(

An incredible day in Alaska, photographing birds with Doug Lloyd, the famous flickr feathered friend fotographer.

THANK YOU DOUG.

Doug told me to check out this little unseen pond by Potter's Marsh in Anchorage Alaska for Horned Grebe. Wow. What a bird!

I call these birds "toucan of the seas". Our local lake has very tame surf scoters. It is the only place I've seen surf scoters in a freshwater habitat.

Need a lens fix (ed)....

Have now resorted to panhandling on the street with kitschy composites for view.

I expect even worse things to come. ;-)

I would very much appreciate it if you would tell me which one you like the best.

Learning how to use my new Wimberley head. I really, really like it :-)

Hoping that you and your loved ones have a wonderful day of warmth, love, peace, and perhaps, even, the greatest of artistic gifts - inspiration! :-)

Part of the Santa Cruz fishing frenzy.

Demonstrating their needle-sharp bills (which is a distinguishing feature from the Red Phalarope) and the black and white "flash pattern" that is so useful in disorienting raptors - the so called flock flee flash ;-)

Despite the fact that the wings are almost perpendicular to the water, its head is pilot-quality straight and level.

I am curious - which one do you like? This one? or the previous one?

Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus)

Fun Fact: Black vultures are classified as raptors, sharing traits like hooked beaks and soaring flight. However, they are primarily scavengers and are more closely related to storks than to hawks.

Yesterday I had a happy accident. This. A manually focused shot ... (revealing my skill at manual focus)!

Yesterday I had an unhappy accident. My big 500mm hit the payment tearing apart a lot of metal...

I think I'll get the pastels out while I wait to hear how much the damage is to fix my right arm.

Caught this bird trying to swallow a crab. The crab kept falling out of its mouth, and it kept trying...Eventually, it got the crab near its mouth, closed its eyes, and swallowed. I know they can bend their bills a bit, but I'd imagine it's a bit like trying to pick up a wet golf ball with chopsticks.

How on earth does a shorebird digest a whole crab? It has to do it pretty fast I would think, since most birds digest food within an hour of ingestion..?

An experiment - would you be so kind as to indulge my curiousity and tell me which one you like better? This one? or that one?

My thanks to Norman Kikuchi, a San Francisco bay area bird photographer, living in Santa Cruz. I met Norman in Nome, even though he lives 60 miles from me. Small world.

Norman put me onto a pair of red-throated loons, insisting that I wade a half-mile through the marsh in my knee-highs, while wearing a bag blind - I do whatever Norman suggests - he's an incredibly gifted photographer!

Norman is from the school of "equipment is meant to be used". I certainly used mine - I brought back half the tundra in my tripod. Thanks Norman - I didn't fall and dunk my equipment - and I got some close shots! :-)

Taken IN one of the many productive ponds just outside of Nome.

Full-frame crop!

Images taken while on works trip to Orkney

Searching in vain, for a vagrant juvie Franklin Gull - That's the thing about birding, you go looking for one thing, but often find another. For me it's a daily reminder of the Buddhist principle of non-attachment :-)

There's been a surfeit of green herons at one of our sewage treatment plates (excuse me, "Water Pollution Control Treatment Plant"). As always they are incredibly well camouflaged. I spotted this one, trying to hide, and while focusing on this one, I eventually realized that there were 3 others around it, all trying to blend into the scenery. They're the most green Green Herons I've seen in a while.
