Can't help taking photos of my valley of birch trees. I'm alone, the sun is setting and the air is clear... Hope I can represent a bit of that atmosphere...
Quite busy next week, see you soon. Thank you for all the comments and favs, my friends.
A young Yellow Birch tree (Betula alleghaniensis), native to north-eastern North America and dwarfed by Larch tree hybrids (Larix x marschlinsii), has a lot to catch-up as it can grow up to 80 feet. It’s got its common name not from this spectacular yellow autumnal dress but from the golden colour of its bark. Locally it is also known as Golden Birch, Swamp Birch. The tall and elegant larches framing the birch are hybrids of European larch (L. decidua) and Japanese larch (L. kaempferi) that could occur spontaneously if the two species grow in close proximity. Not sure if this is what had happened here, or the hybrids were planted already as hybrids. These Larch hybrids were first discovered on the grounds of the Dunkeld Estate and Cathedral in Perthshire, Scotland at the turn of the 20th century, hence their common name, the Dunkeld larch. Taken in Silk Wood, Westonbirt Arboretum. Westonbirt near Tetbury, South Gloucestershire, England, UK.
