(Attempt with depth of field)

I was lucky to have some color in the sky the evening I was in Bingen if only momentarily it made for a less than boring capture of the famous Mouse Tower.

In my previous post I mentioned the Bishop of Mainz extracted his tolls from the river tradesman with his three toll burgs, the mouse tower being on the river was the principal place of toll collection.

There is a story that goes the Bishop was also in charge of food distribution in the region and during a particular bad harvest season refused to let the backup stores be distributed and tricked the townspeople into a building that he barred the entrance to and set it ablaze.

Apparently laughing to himself about the townspeople tortured screams sounding like rats, he visited his own curse upon himself as that night a swarm of rats chased him down through town and cornered him in the mouse tower where he was devoured by the horde.

Disclaimer: Not trying to be realistic in my editing there is enough realism in the world, my style is a mix of painterly and romanticism as well as a work in progress.

I took this with my D750 and Tamron SP 24-70 2.8 G2 Lens processed in LR, PS and DXO Nik

The delicate white blossoms of this fruit-bearing cherry are just blooming. The 20-30 stamen have orange and red tips and surround the central pistil.

This cherry variant traces back to the late nineteenth century Pacific Northwest (“PNW”), & is credited to an Oregon nursery and its foreman, Ah Bing. 70% of annual US cherry production occurs in the PNW - and Washington is the biggest producer. The Bing is the most popular sweet cherry in the US, accounting for 50% of Washington State’s nation-leading cherry crop.

Besides being delicious to eat, Bing cherries are high in antioxidants.

Bingen Am Rhein is the Rodney Dangerfield of the Mittle Rhein, it is overshadowed by its more popular kitschy Rudesheim across the river but is quite lovely and offers a more relaxed evening experience than shouldering your way through crowds of drunken tourists at its boisterous cousin.

Pictured here is the minor Basilica of St Martin handily seen from anywhere in town is a mix of styles but its last major renovation in 1416 cements it as a Gothic dominant structure.

The Romans originally had a temple to Mercury here until 406 AD when it was destroyed and then a church has resided here since 793 AD.

In 1944 it was damaged in bombing run that collapsed part of the roof and the high altar, restored today the rich interior houses reliquaries of St Rupert and Hildegard and excellent statuary from the 14&15th century
