Looking from North Head at the mouth of Sydney Harbour across to South Head and the centre of Sydney, which is to the right of the photo. It is hard to believe it is a winter's day.
In the foreground is part of Sydney Harbour National Park. The area was burnt last year in a hazard reduction burn that got out of control.
North Head was a site for military installations during World War II. Some of these remain but the majority of the headland is bushland. Amazingly, the government who owned the land did not sell it off to be developed.
Sydney Harbour has been described as the jewel in Sydney's crown. I think it is easy to see why.

Die Gesamtbaukosten des Bahnhofs beliefen sich auf etwa 4 Milliarden Dollar, Zum Zeitpunkt der Inbetriebnahme war er damit der teuerste Bahnhof weltweit. Der Marmor aus dem die Halle errichtet wurde stammt aus Südtirol.
The “Oculus” Transit Hall is the above-ground centerpiece of the large interchange station, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, whose platforms lie directly beneath the site where the twin towers of the old World Trade Center stood before 9/11. The total construction cost of the station was approximately $4 billion, making it the most expensive station in the world at the time of commissioning. The marble from which the hall was built comes from South Tyrol.
What does it even mean to be 1.5 billion years old? Carbon dating has confirmed the rocks at Cameron Falls to be Precambrian, at that age. To think of that much time is just mind blowing. Can you imagine finding some kind of fossilized life in the stones? How incredible would that be?!

The bushfires are still raging nationwide having started way back in June 2019.
There were 34 fatalities so far including firefighters who so bravely fought the fires so others could be safe and more than 6,500 properties destroyed and not to mentioned a billion animals had perished.
As of 14 January 2020, 18.626 million hectares (46.03 million acres) was burnt or is burning across all Australian states and territories. ... In comparison, the 2018 California wildfires consumed 800,000 hectares (2 million acres) and the 2019 Amazon rainforest wildfires burnt 900,000 hectares (2.2 million acres) of land.
Major cities were blanketed in smoke , schools were closed and sporting events cancelled. The smoke has travelled as far as Chile and Argentina.
Could all this be prevented? Did the authorities see this coming? Who is to be blamed? There is more questions than answers but the main issues have been hijacked and politicised so much so that facts and fallacies are all muddled up.
Suffer the animals, suffer those who are affected and kudos and tributes to those who fight the fires and perished so to keep the rest of us safe !

Billions want to come to the UK. So, stop the boats! These illegal incomers want to take your job, your second home and one of your cars (at least) and, God forbid, take your daughters from you. They will invade our NHS and their foreign offspring will fill our schools too. Do not listen to Labour, the reds, the trade unions and the churches. Don't read the papers of the liberals and the left - these are loony humanitarian idealists. Beware! Stop the boats, get things done, and off to Rwanda with them!

The Milky Way ia a barred spiral galaxy, about 100,000 light-years across. If you could look down on it from the top, you would see a central bulge surrounded by four large spiral arms that warp around it. Spiral galaxies make up about two-third of the galaxies in the universe.

The Milky Way does not sit still, but is constantly rotating. As such, the arms are moving through space. The sun and the solar system travel with them. The solar system travels at an average speed of 515.000 mph (828,000 km/h). Even at this rapid speed, the solar system would take about 230 million years to travel all the way around the Milky Way.

I think they are Chironomid Midges. They rose from the lush grasses in unbelievable numbers - probably billions. If there were any more of them, they'd have to be smaller. There are about 800 named species of Chironomidae in Canada, and probably hundreds more unnamed, so I'm not going to try to I.D. these down to species.
The background is my slightly out of focus car. I was returning from a walkabout along the shore of Island Lake - at a fast trot, clouds of insects rising around me. Loud humming sounds from a billion wings beating, and although they lack a proboscis and do not bite, every one of them seemed to think my nose or ears would be a good place to live.
I decided to move on to Lonetree Lake, just a few km down the dirt road, but they were also there in uncountable numbers. Fortunately they stayed away from the lakeshore, so I was able to sit in peace while waiting for water birds - grebes, waterfowl - to venture in close enough for photos. Any foray into the tall grasses, however, led to another uprising. I think these are mating swarms, the males tuning in to the frequency of female wingbeats. It was kind of fascinating. They don't live long as adults; their season is brief. A few days. A week. My timing was perfect. I expect them to be long gone the next time I visit these two lakes...
Back to birds tomorrow. Birds have been my subject for the past month. They were a long time coming, following our late winter, but good things are worth waiting for, and the spring season has been wonderful.

Recently we passed by Mono Lake in California. The lake has iconic tufa towers. You can see the Milky Way - it was new moon, there is no light pollution.
The Milky Way is our galaxy. From the latest Hubble telescope observation we learned that there are at least 100 billion galaxies in the universe. We are just tiny tiny creatures in this vast space.
I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance.
