Looking from North Head at the mouth of Sydney Harbour across to South Head and the centre of Sydney, which is to the right of the photo. It is hard to believe it is a winter's day.

In the foreground is part of Sydney Harbour National Park. The area was burnt last year in a hazard reduction burn that got out of control.

North Head was a site for military installations during World War II. Some of these remain but the majority of the headland is bushland. Amazingly, the government who owned the land did not sell it off to be developed.

Sydney Harbour has been described as the jewel in Sydney's crown. I think it is easy to see why.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC is the parent company of the BNSF Railway (formerly the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway). The company is an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, which is controlled by investor Warren Buffett.

History

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation was incorporated in 1993 to facilitate the merger of Burlington Northern, Incorporated, parent of the Burlington Northern Railroad, and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation, which owned the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (Santa Fe). The corporate merger was consummated on September 22, 1995, at which point shareholders of the previous companies became shareholders of BNSF and the two companies became wholly owned subsidiaries of BNSF. In December 1996, the two holding companies and two railroads were formally merged, and in January 1998 the remaining intermediate holding company was folded into the railroad.

Robert D. Krebs of Santa Fe Pacific was president of BNSF from the merger until 1999, chief executive from the merger until 2000, and chairman from 1997 until 2002. He was succeeded in all three positions by Matthew K. Rose.

On November 3, 2009, Berkshire Hathaway made a $26 billion offer to buy the remaining 77.4% of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation it did not already own, valuing the purchase at $34 billion. The deal, which including Berkshire's previous investment and the assumption of $10 billion in Burlington Northern debt brings the total value to $44 billion. Consummated February 12, 2010, it is the largest acquisition in Berkshire Hathaway's history.

The deal was structured so that the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation would merge with and into R Acquisition Company, LLC, an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. The deal closed on February 12, 2010, and at the same time, the now merged company changed its name to Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC that remains an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.

Driving into New York City from New Jersey....you can see the skyline under the viaduct. This is the Pulaski Skyway, an alternate route. Half of it is currently being repaired to the cost of a billion dollars! And only half!

Nothing But Thieves - Six Billion

In his beautiful palace by the sea, the Prince of the Peacocks proudly shows his betrothed, Princess Petunia his prized pet parrot, and offers her a posy of pretty petunias.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 20th of July is “P… in the picture”, where the image can be anything, but must contain something that begins with the letter P. That left me lots of choices. I had a few runners-up that were photographed first, such as a peridot and pearl pin, and my beloved Paddington bear, but in the end the Playmobil won out because I could include multiple items beginning with the letter P: prince, princess, peacocks, parrots, a perch, a posy of petunias, and even for those of you who are very observant, a grey pigeon amongst the white and blue doves. Even the background is a P for it is made of paper, as is the floor, which is patterned, and since everything else in this picture is Playmobil, I would say that it is practically perfect for the theme! I hope you think so too, and that it brings a smile to your face!

Playmobil is a line of toys produced by the Brandstätter Group, headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany. Production began in 1974. Playmobil began to be sold worldwide in 1975, and by 2009, approximately 2.2 billion Playmobil figures had been sold. The signature Playmobil toy is a 7.5 cm tall human figure with a particular smiling face. A wide range of accessories, buildings and vehicles, as well as many sorts of animals, are also part of the Playmobil line. Playmobil toys are produced in themed series of sets as well as individual special figures and playsets. New products and product lines developed by a 50-strong development team are introduced frequently, and older sets are discontinued. Promotional and one-off products are sometimes produced in very limited quantities. These practices have helped give rise to a sizeable community of collectors.

These billions with the Milky Way were photographed with the camera on a beanbag on a wall overlooking the Tarangire River plain in northwest Tanzania. Safaris demand that one travel light, and that usually means no tripod, especially when it's dangerous to go outside at night anyway. Leopards are about! Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.

Vast, magnificent and inarguably beautiful, the Grand Canyon is easily Arizona’s most distinguishable landmark – and a natural wonder that you simply have to see to believe. Stretching 277 miles from end to end, steep, rocky walls descend more than a mile to the canyon’s floor, where the wild Colorado River traces a swift course southwest. Rock that dates back 1.8 billion years lies at the bottom. Exactly how the river formed the canyon is still unclear, but geologists generally agree that most of the cutting occurred within the last five million years.

Recently we passed by Mono Lake in California. The lake has iconic tufa towers. You can see the Milky Way - it was new moon, there is no light pollution.

The Milky Way is our galaxy. From the latest Hubble telescope observation we learned that there are at least 100 billion galaxies in the universe. We are just tiny tiny creatures in this vast space.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance.
