Times Square. Arguably New York City's most crowded outdoor place. And rightfully so, as when you stand at any spot on that square your eyes are overwhelmed by the amount of light and information around you. A ton of billboards advertising anything that your mind can think of. And then you feel so small being surrounded by all these high rises. So much energy and vibe on this square. Even if it's 2.00 in the morning, there will be a ton of people wandering around and taking pictures. Maybe that's why they say New York is the city that never sleeps.
4 Strings - Take Me Away
A billboard at the corner of Seventh Avenue and 42nd St. just outside of Times Square. There was something about the red truck and the girl that struck me as the photo to post of the ones I took. And I’ve always loved the question “what if?”
Photo taken somewhere around the early 1980s. Film is Tri-X. I didn't keep very good records then so I don't know the exact date or the exact camera. It was either a Pentax ME or a Nikon FM. Those were the 2 I owned at the time.
This billboard seemed to be all aflutter with a wee bit of a sparkled from the diamond in the ring... one of the most delicate billboard images I've ever seen in... don't have a clue tho, who it represents.. must be a diamond jeweler in the city...
The temporary camaraderie of these "plywood men" will only last the duration of the billboard campaign.
A CSX local powered by an SD40-2 from Charleston's Bennett Yard heads towards the Peninsula. That the Billboard is not what it seems is coincidental.
Shot in Soho in Manhattan. Billboard posters like these can seen in many parts of the city esp in Manhattan. Many Manhattanites don't approve of them because they block their view of the street. Others find them distasteful and offensive because some of them border on pornography, esp the Calvin Klein ones,as far as they're concerned and they don't want their children being exposed to them. Some landlords however like them because they promote business.
got to break up the plethora of selfies or people think you're a narcissist. the colors of the billboard work but i ain't feeling the huge budweiser sign. yes, yes i know i took the shot.
Dupe slide of a classic South Shore Line billboard, date unknown. Thanks to Art Peterson for snapping this way back when! Scan of a slide in my collection.

Last year there was a controversial advertising campaign during the Super Bowl and on billboards in Las Vegas. One of the ads can be seen on the billboard above.

City lights are burning bright,
Casting stories through the night.
Faces flicker in the glow,
Hide in places they’ll never go.
Traffic hums a restless tune,
Echoed whispers chase the moon.
Promises fade where the neon glows,
Underneath the billboard shadows.
Billboard shadows, they cover scar,
Hiding the truth beneath the stars.
Dreams are sold in flashing lights,
But shadows linger in the night.
Behind the glamour, there’s a place unseen,
Where the night reveals what the day won’t mean.
Busy lights flicker in the glass,
The world keeps spinning, the moments pass.
Billboard shadows, they cover the scars,
Hiding the truth beneath the stars.
Dreams are sold in flashing lights,
But shadows linger in the night.
Billboard shadows, fading away,
Chasing the night into the day.
But in their glow, the city’s soul,
Forever lives in shadows below.
