White Rhino. White and Black Rhino are both the same color. The names are misnomers. There are two species of rhinos. One species are grazers that eat grasses and ground plants. The other are browsers that eat leaves from trees and bushes. The grazers have a broad face with a wide mouth to take in as much grass as possible. The browsers have a narrow pointed face in order to reach between the branches of bushes to get to the leaves. The name given to the grazers, White Rhino, is actually a corruption of the Dutch word for "wide." To distinguish the two, the browser species became known as Black Rhinos.

The Etosha elephants are regarded as tallest in Africa. The number of elephants in Etosha park is around 2000. The most usual appearance is small family units and bull herds. A large herds are made up of small units, each unit consisting of a matriarch, several adult cows and offspring of different ages. Grown up young bulls are forced out of these units at the age of about 12-15 years and later they join bull herds. The tasks of elephants in Etosha which are actually two upper front teeth do not attain significant lengths mostly attributable to mineral deficiency. Another reason is that elephants use the tasks for digging up a roots and breaking the tips of tasks in process. Picture taken by Henk Kruger

These days it is not so obvious to see rhino for all the sad and well-known reasons. Matobo National Park still is a welcome exception where, despite not being free of poaching problems, the populations of both Black and White Rhino are still in a fairly good state. Chances of actually seeing Black Rhino are slim but White Rhino can be found with relative ease and nothing can really beat the intense and exhilarating experience of tracking rhino on foot.
