Malaya the Snow Leopard strikes an iconic pose that echos an illuminated chapter heading inscribed by monks during the dark ages - from before Gutenberg invented moveable type....!

Friday night during the golden hour of sunset and the first hours of the Brookfield Zoo Holiday Lights festival, Malaya and her mate Sabu were more active than I've seen them! Here Malaya frolics with some extra something in a green bag that her caretakers gave her - is there such a thing as Leopard-Nip? Because she was pretty cranked up!

Powerpack

From a distance, one can hardly imagine how powerful a leopard can be.

He seems almost dainty.

Only up close, you realize what muscle power is in this beautiful cat.

Fully grown, this animal actually weighs only about 70 kg, but can easily bring more than its own weight of prey to safety in the highest treetops from other predators.

Leopard sightings are usually very rare - After all, these beautiful cats are among the most difficult of the BigFive to find!

Suddenly and totally unexpected for me, this beautiful cat came out of the tall grass and showed herself.

10 seconds she gave us - then she disappeared again deep in the bushes and in her territory!

Lioness in the Maasai Mara

Shortly after the rainy season the Masai Mara turns into a green paradise. The grass is then particularly high. For the predatory cats the best chances to sneak up on their prey undetected.

World Lion Day is a day to pay tribute to these magnificent cats and to bring awareness to the significant decline of lions in Africa and Asia. Can you imagine an Africa with no lions?

It is not for nothing that these queens among predators have a special character. Pride and dignity are only some of their attributes.

Amu Leopard Cub is VERY TOUGH GUY!!!111 RAWR!

Amur Leopards are critically endangered with less than 200 in the world remaining, so it is a joy when two cubs were born at Brookfield Zoo on April 18, 2018.

Today Jilin and Samson came down and were very active - the two cubs playing rambunctiously with each other. Wrestling, tackling, hunting - very fun and cute.

Luluka(Leopard) had a good meal followed by a long siesta- she woke up around sunset time sitting in this relaxed posture.

Kaboso's Lofthouse

Meeting the leopard lady Kaboso in her natural habitat is always a highlight. After all, she and her conspecifics are among the most difficult of the BigFive to find!

They like to retreat to trees, mostly undiscovered - where they can spend hours.

Kaboso, however, showed up here for once in her loft in airy heights and was already well recognizable from afar.

Watching over the Masai Mara

Kenya, Africa

A day in the Masai Mara

In the deep grass, the lioness sneaked up unnoticed on a warthog family. For her it was an easy game to put up the youngest offspring, while in the background a herd of buffalos grazed on completely uninterested. This is nature - this is African Wildlife!

This is the resident female Leopard of the Lebala concession in Northern Botswana. The guides call her Jane. We were lucky to follow her and her 11 month old cub for about an hour. She was taking the cub where she left an Impala carcass.
