Somehow I inherited old books from my family of origin. Such as this one, printed in 1900, entitled "The Complete Poems of Sir Thomas More; Collected by Himself with Explanatory Notes". The thin piece of tissue or vellum protects an old photo or lithograph of the man himself.

Do you remember when vintage or antique books were assembled with such care?

hobby or passion ...

When I was a child, my Grandmother used to read the old faerie tales of Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson out of big (at least they appeared to be so to a small child) old tooled leather and gilded fabric volumes. One book that was a favourite of mine, was a copy of "Fairy Tales Told Again", the English translated version of "Les Contes de Perrault" illustrated with black and white engravings by the French illustrator Gustave Doré, which had belonged to my Great, Great Grandfather: a volume I still possess today, and which as an antiquarian bibliophile I now know to be a first edition of the title from 1882 which had been passed down through the generations of my family. One of the illustrations I loved was that of a cherub like Little Red Riding Hood climbing into bed with the Wolf, who is hiding his true identity beneath a frilly mob cap pulled low over his furry brow. Imagine my surprise when, as an adult, I moved half-way around the world with my collection of antique volumes of faerie tales, only to discover a Romantic style painting of Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf by Gustave Doré from 1862 hanging in the Nineteenth Century European Paintings Gallery in Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria!

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 24th of January is "in the style of..." which requires a photo in the style of your favourite photographer or artist (painter or sculptor), and then to tell my audience whose style I think the picture emulates. I have chosen the more detailed rendition of one of the designs made by the great French illustrator Gustave Doré for the faerie tales of Charles Perrault (1628–1703), which were printed in Paris in 1862 and now hangs in the National Gallery of Victoria. You can find a link to the paining here: www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/3918/ and I will also include a link in the first comment below. In his painting, Gustave Doré has illustrated Perrault’s original Little Red Riding Hood of 1697 – rather than the later, sanitised versions, mainly for British audiences, and depicts the story’s penultimate moment, just before the triumphant, and satiated, wolf bites off Little Red Riding Hood’s head. Terror was often a key component in faerie tales which also had a moralising element or subtext. Romantic artists were drawn to these darker aspects of tales written for children. I have used my little bear Scout as our heroine Little Red Riding Hood, because it is his favourite faerie tale after all, and he recently received his very own Red Riding Hood cape from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, which he wears for the picture. Joining him in the bed is Monsieur Charles, my Moulin Roty wolf from the "Il était une Fois" series of toys. He is wearing an antique lace and satin bedcap from the 1880s from my vintage clothing collection, pulled down low over his furry brow. Just like the paining, Grandmamma's glasses lie on the snowy white counterpane and whilst I don't have a pipe and leather tobacco pouch such as the one depicted in the painting, I do have the next best thing - a sterling silver Georgian snuff box, which I hope will suffice. In the painting, the bed hangings are red, which I have have recreated here. As Gustave Doré painted an oil on canvas, I have given my photograph a painterly effect using a filter from BeFunky, and I have signed the painting in the same spot that Gustave Doré did in the bottom right-hand corner. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, that you feel I have emulated Gustave Doré's style and that it makes you smile!

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Charles the Wolf (Le Loup Charles) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. He wears a removable purple coat with a black furry trim and smart fur lined boots. He also has a big mouth and sharp teeth - all the better to eat you with, my dear!

Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.

With nearly 53 million items, the New York City Public Library is the second largest public library in the United States, behind only of the Library of Congress.

The main branch of the New York Public Library on the Schwarzman Building was officially opened on May 23, 1911. In 1910, 75 miles (121 km) of shelves were installed, and it took a year to move and install the initial collection of books.

The Picture is from one of its "Modern" corridors, but the main building is a Beaux-Arts design and was the largest marble structure by that time in the United States.

The library originated in the 19th century, and its founding and roots are the amalgamation of grass-roots libraries, social libraries of bibliophiles and the wealthy, and from philanthropy of the wealthiest Americans of their age.

Midnight Order is opening its doors for a new round for 2026, a bumper size event. As always there's some beautiful items for you to peer at, including this jacket by Pendulum. Just look at the scrollwork on the jacket. Look. At. It. :-O It looks amazeballs on certain PBR lighting and your friends will admire for sure.

On the flipside for the bibliophiles amongst you may want to go check out the floating library from Whats Lost Spirits. You can move things around too so its perfect for sci-fi, occult and whatever other shenanigans you get up to.

N. S. Vsevolozhsky (1772-1857), a historian and bibliophile, founded a printing house in 1809, which he placed in a side wing of this building. It was one of the few wooden buildings that survived the fire of 1812, then there was the residence of General J.D. Compan and official publications of the Napoleonic army were printed. In 1875, the territory around the estate, including itself, became owned by a French citizen from Lyon, a merchant of the Moscow guild, Claudius Osipovich (Claude-Marie) Giraud, who, together with another merchant Alexei Mikhailovich Istomin, began active construction of a silk factory, which later became the largest silk-weaving factory in the Russian Empire.

It is a warm spring day. The sun casts its golden glow upon a quaint streetcar, now repurposed into a haven of literary delight. Once bustling with commuters, it had found new life as a cozy home library, a sanctuary for the bookworms and bibliophiles of the neighborhood. Inside, shelves overflows with books of every genre, their spines adorned with age and wisdom.

As the gentle breeze carries the scent of blooming flowers through the open windows, two playful puppies scamper about, their tails wagging with excitement. Amidst the pages and paws, you find solace, nestled in an cozy armchair with a beloved novel in hand. With each turn of the page, you are transported to distant lands and magical realms, enveloped in the timeless charm of the tram's cozy confines.

And so, in this unlikely setting, a new chapter unfolds - a one of serenity, companionship, and the enduring power of stories to transport us to worlds beyond our own.

I wanted to include one shot at least in the little town of Hay on Wye on my stream. I have to be honest the photographs I took there were not very good this is about the best one. It shows the clock tower in the centre of town.

If you love books then a visit to Hay on Wye is essential . You will see the sign for the poetry bookshop in the image. The town however boasts of 22 other bookshops you could spend all day browsing and buying books. Not sure why this little town became a bibliophile’s paradise . It is however the site of the famous Hay on Wye literary festival that draws writers and readers from across the world.

THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT TO MY STREAM.

I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD NOT FAVE A PHOTO

WITHOUT ALSO LEAVING A COMMENT .

In one of my previous posts I showed a library without books. Lucky for me as a bibliophile there were still some books left. The beautiful brass spiral staircase was a bonus.

Enjoy!
