I have three reliably blooming winter flowers in my garden (Witch Hazel, Mahonia, and Hellebore), which always help me through the winter months by adding their beauty and, in this case, unusual sparks of color. This dramatic and captivating flower is called Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginia) and blooms on a small tree. A form of lichen likes to grow on its branches and I think it makes a striking combination with the orange blossoms.

Salar de Talar is a large salt flat located in the high puna of northern Chilean Andes, at an altitude of 3,950 m. It is part of a series of salt lakes and salt flats located at the foothills of a chain of volcanoes stretching along the eastern side of the much greater Salar de Atacama. The salty flat is bordered on the west by Caichinque and on the east by Cerro Medano, is a mountain with striking shades of grey and brown, which contrast nicely with the sparkling white of the salt flat's surface. On top of that, colourful ponds fringe its shores. Salar de Talar is a part of the Central Andean dry puna ecoregion, which in this zone is characterized by tussock grass vegetation.

The word "hoodoo" means to bewitch, which is what Bryce Canyon's rock formations surely do.
Actually there is a mixture of Spires and hoodoos in this image.
In common usage, the difference between Hoodoos and spires is that hoodoos have a variable thickness often described as having a “totem pole-shaped body.
A spire, on the other hand, has a smoother profile or uniform thickness that tapers from the ground upward.

Witch Hazel, 'Hamemelis virginiana', will faithfully bloom in my January garden through blizzards and frigid cold. It cheers my heart in the depths of midwinter.

This most amazing swish of a cloud appeared over a small land mass and caught my attention. Already set up to capture the departing Ferry, all that was necessary was to swing my camera to the right. It was already mounted on a tripod and my view was unrestricted, because I was standing at the end of a peer.
I remember how it transfixed me. with the way it formed in the slight breeze. How it coloured with the rays of the setting sun, while hovering over the land. And, how very blue the water became as the cloud gradually morphed into a more pinkish colour. Nature is bewitching with charm and often commands absolute, unbridled attention.
