love is the answer, at least for most of the questions in my heart

like why are we here? and where do we go?

and how come it's so hard?

it's not always easy and

sometimes life can be deceiving

i'll tell you one thing, it's always better when we're together

yeah, it's always ♬♪ better when we're together ♬♪

*taken at Skrunda-2 - yup, a cool place!

Day 7 of being stuck in the house because of last weeks storm. Still no cars permitted on the roads, only in case of emergency or to get supplies. Cabin fever has set in and sometimes we walk the neighbourhood just to get out for a bit.

My two littles...they have been playing non-stop and keeping each other company this whole time. They make a bad situation feel like a holiday with their joy and excitement and I am awfully glad I get to be trapped with them.

Better Together

Hope everyone has been well. I've been a tad distracted here lately and hope to catch up with everyone soon.

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, stay safe and laugh often! ❤️❤️❤️

Here's some more snowy scenes around Edinburgh. I have to say - the snow really brought joy to our household this year. I know some people aren't a fan but it's been nothing but smiles and grins.

Still getting to grips with a new lens (thanks John!), the 70-300L. I haven't owned a zoom in probably 15 years so it requires getting out of old habits. In any case, it's a lot of fun!

Yesterday when I randomly woke up at 4am, I looked out the windows to see that we were finally getting our share of snow from Storm Darcy.

For the first time, I had to get the bus into town in order to shoot these locations - it is a weird feeling. But once there it still felt like home.

Several horizontal images shifted and then stitched vertically.

Was chatting this week at work about how much I hope we get another good year of snowfall in Edinburgh and the fact that I never processed this shot came to mind.

I found this location through a friend a few years ago and only now have gotten around to visiting. It's a trek from our place but not too bad for someone living on the southside.

This spot looks out from the northern tip of the Scottish Borders across Midlothian and into Edinburgh. I'm roughly a mile away from the first ridge of trees in the image.

A single 300mm shot would have been much smaller, but of course I can't help myself and took 28 images that included the Pentlands to the west only to crop it afterwards. The range of city here is from the Braid Hills in the southwest of the city over to Portobello in the east.

I managed to capture a helicopter and a V-formation of migrating geese as well. Our neighbourhood is beyond the Old Town ridge but you can still spot some New Town towers. Southside monuments east of Blackford Hill are well distinguishable.

What I adore about this image is that it shows off the wonderful landscape and surroundings of our wee city. Edinburgh's dense, historical, and full of character but it's also located in a beautiful part of the world that's easily accessible from even the city centre.

GPS is the exact location.

As dusk neared yesterday, I decided it was time I picked up my camera again - it had been a month. This time, I managed to leave the flat with only my 85mm - and while I think I would have been better off with my usual 24mm, it's nice to get out of my comfort zone. Here's the result.

Have a great day my friend!

I'll always remember this shot as one I took on my way to source a Thanksgiving ham at 8:30 at night (it's a long story).

Since returning from holiday I've been neglecting my camera. When I saw the sky illuminated with a nightly display from the Castle, I decided it was time to get back out there. I have a few more images to come, but here's one just now - a 14,000 pixel-wide-view over the whole valley between Old Town and New Town into Waverley Station.

About eight 30 second long exposures merged to make this image.

There's no combination of words

I could put on the back of a postcard

No song I could sing

But I can try for your heart

Our dreams, and they are made out of real things

Like a, shoebox of photographs

A long exposure panoramic from the side of the High Road in Holyrood Park, a no-brainer of a place to pull over with the gear and get a couple of shots. This angle may make it seem like the city is far away, however Holyrood Park is just outside the city centre and a great place to have on your doorstep.

It was a cold evening but I couldn't stop staring at this beautiful place.

An image that for whatever reason I never processed - here's a throwback to 2019 from the Castle. The best part about images of Old Town in Edinburgh is that they're timeless.

5DSR + 135L

I generally dislike converting a colour photo to black and white. A.) I'm not good at it, B.) I prefer colour every single time and C.) it gets overused by pretentious photographers who like to call their B&W conversion "art". Anyway, both of these were shot in extremely flat light - and it was either present them as B&W or not upload them at all. Snowy scenes like this are worth enjoying in this city, so here they are.

Fairly pleased to have gotten this image, one which I've wanted for quite some time. It's taken through an opening in the canon battery wall. Due to the Castle opening times, it's really only possible to get blue hour at this time of year. And, due to the cost of entering the Castle, this image was only made possible by the free admission to celebrate St. Andrew. This is 5 frames stitched together at 135mm.

The clock on Tron church shows 4:50pm, which was just about the time that Castle staff came over to where I was and kicked me out!

More light trails, another day, another direction. I had limited time out tonight and even more limited inspiration - but I'm happy with the result. The Trams passed me on my left and the Airlink passed me on my right, creating an unusual Hot/Cold fire&ice juxtaposition. I'm never bored photographing this city.

Two long exposure frames stitched into a panoramic.

Crappy photos here: Instagram

In the title is Edinburgh, but really it's too far out to be considered Edinburgh. It's Midlothian, although never home, a place very special in my heart.

We get out of the city more often than this Flickr feed would indicate - once or twice a week we're off to a local beach or into the countryside for a walk with the crazy dugs. This is one such occasion - both Podencos being looked after by my better half while I fumbled about in my wellies.

I was struck today by just how fortunate we are to live in the city centre but be within a short drive (or in some cases just a walk) of so much natural beauty. I think that's probably one of Edinburgh's less celebrated features - its urban density is surrounded by so many wonderful parks, rugged coast, woodland walks, and scenic countryside that it's easy to be "away from it all" within 20 minutes.

God has blessed Scotland.

Here's a description from the organisers website:

"Burns&Beyond presents the Scottish premier of international artist Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow, lighting up the skies above Edinburgh, with messages of Hope, Love and Kindness for 2021. As we pass the one-year anniversary since lock-down restrictions began, reflecting on the year past, but now looking ahead with renewed hope and optimism, we believe it is more important than ever to let some light back into our lives, celebrating the work of our NHS Staff and key workers, and looking forward to a brighter future for all."

The wind up on Calton Hill was brutal last night - I had two different panoramas but frames from each were unusable, so I am left here with this single frame. The strength of those lasers was definitely something impressive, so felt quite glad to be able to have a view for myself. I'm always really happy when global artists come to town and put their stamp on our wee city.

I realised the other day that I've been listening to EDM almost exclusively for 20 years. Here's a good example ^^^

Speaking of good examples, this photo is one of many of why I love to call this place home.

Stay inside for the work Zoom call or go out with the camera? This was the dilemma... until I decided I'd attempt both.

It's probably the best of both worlds in the end - my colleagues don't have to see my ugly mug while I can still contribute to the meeting on my phone, and I get a fabulous view over the city while putting the camera to use. I'll definitely be doing work Zoom calls like this in the future.

Sunset was useless but I stayed until the last light and captured this instead. Several vertical frames stitched horizontally.

Skyline of Edinburgh from Inverleith Park. Storm Dudley was causing a bit of headache but for Scots it wasn't such a problem as we're used to the wind. Storm Eunice blew by a few days later over England and the BBC was in hysterics. Fortunately I was driving home from work when the sun coincided with a huge cloud rolling over the southside while overhead on the northside it was bone dry.

Several vertical frames horizontally stitched into this panoramic.

A very busy Calton Hill this past Sunday afternoon as crowds of tourists gathered all over to view the sunset and take selfies. I was originally there to capture blue hour, but at 135mm the nautical twilight lingered for ages, so this is the result.

For the first time in more than 70 years, the Edinburgh International Festival has been cancelled. The EIF was keen to show that the Festivals would be here in the future, so has put on My Light Shines On across the city. Difficult to capture until properly dark (and still difficult then), the moving lights are fairly well visible across the city from multiple would-be venues.

Mixed blessing, to be honest. It's the first August since we moved here 10 years ago that we will enjoy. While the festivals can be tolerable if you buy tickets to shows and make the most of it, generally speaking it makes life hell for city centre residents. Despite the city benefiting financially from the world's largest arts festival, I'm glad we have just one year of reprieve.

Panoramic of three images, moderate post-processing.

Shamefully, I haven't been behind a camera in two months, and I'd chosen to avoid the festive areas of the city for a similar duration [understandably so]. But I did manage to capture this view, on the last day of the attractions for the first time in many years. I think it looks chaotic and crazy, but then again - that's Christmas time in Edinburgh.

Tram on the left, Airlink bus on the right. Three separate frames stitched together for this one image. For the first time in ages, I've retained perspective distortion in camera.

A mad rush out the door last night led to this capture at almost 12:30am, exposing the last light of the summer horizon. Knowing I would see a beautiful sight upon arrival, I couldn't hesitate - and I'm glad I didn't.

Edinburgh Castle from the Vennel staircase near the Grassmarket in Old Town. A view I've wanted to capture for a long while; the red just seemed perfectly appropriate.

5D II + TSE 24L II

Like many during lockdown, I've looked in my archives to see what I've missed. So far this is the only one I've felt compelled to process and post. The truth is that I didn't/don't get out with the camera as much as I should to begin with.

This was taken on St. Andrews Day when the Castle has free access until dusk. Originally I processed a much wider panoramic, in which the left half was filled with both the Christmas bonanza and the massive crane ensemble of the St. James Centre - it felt far too busy and unbalanced so I scrapped the whole image. Now that I've rescued it and cropped it entirely to the right, I can see the two lighthouses in the distance, Elie Ness and Fidra, 35km and 30km in the distance.

December doesn't feel that long ago, and yet it feels like another era.

I made it up into the hills at Liberton specifically for this shot - normally the Kirk doesn't look its best in the dead of winter but the snow makes all the difference.
