Die Interpretation der mittelalterlichen Bildquellen kann sich nur selten auf zeitgenössische schriftliche Dokumente stützen und muss daher von den Aussagen des Kunstwerks selbst, seiner Entstehungszeit, seiner Form und seinem Inhalt ausgehen und versuchen, diese in die allgemeine historische Entwicklung einzuordnen.
Erst wenn dem Kunstwerk sein Platz in der Geschichte zugewiesen ist, lässt sich wieder ein Bezug zu den schriftlichen Quellen herstellen.
Als Stifter der Glasmalereien im 15. Jahrhundert treten die Stadt und Mitglieder der politischen Führungsschicht auf, unter denen sich sowohl Adelige als auch reich gewordene Kaufleute befinden.
Die Glasmalereistiftungen waren in erster Linie ein Akt der Frömmigkeit, doch verfolgten die Stifter damit auch weltliche Ziele. Das Patronatsrecht zu erlangen war der Hauptantrieb der Stadt für den Münsterbau.
Dieses Ziel wollte sie mit zwei Mitteln erreichen: mit der Organisation des Baus und seiner Finanzierung sowie mit der Herrschaft über das Niederkirchenwesen. Beides liess sie 1418 von Papst Martin V. absegnen und bald in die Tat umsetzen.
Der Bau begann 1421 mit der Errichtung der Seitenkapellen, deren Gründern das Recht zugesichert wurde, den Priester für die von ihnen ausgestatteten Altäre zu präsentieren.
Der Bau des Münsters setzte sich mit der Errichtung des Chores fort, dessen Finanzierung der Deutsche Orden als Kirchherr hätte tragen müssen.
Mit ihren Glasmalereistiftungen (Passions- und Mühlenfenster) repräsentierte sich jedoch die Stadt in dieser Rolle. Die übrigen Stifter der Chorverglasung waren Mitträger der städtischen Herrschaft und unterstützten die Ziele des Gemeinwesens.
Bis ins 18. Jahrhundert kümmerten sich die Bürger der Stadt und die Gesellschaften um die Verglasung der Pfarrkirche, so dass die erhaltenen Scheiben Wandlungen in der Gesellschaft, vor allem die Abkapselung der Führungsschicht gegenüber reichen Aufsteigern, deutlich spiegeln.

It has the proper Robot lens cap marked "Robot Germany". Interestingly it appears to be made of rubber. All the others I have seen have been Bakelite or metal.

Just outside the Bundeshaus is the Bundesplatz where an impressive vegetable and flower market takes place on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
The Berner Münster rises high above the Old Town of Bern, with the Nydeggkirche in the foreground.
The Berner Münster is the tallest religious building in all of Switzerland, its spire standing 100m high above the Gothic architecture of the church itself.
Also known as the Münster St Vinzenz, work on its construction was started in 1421 and continued until the 16th century to a design by Matthäus Ensinger of Strasbourg.
It is the most modern of all Switzerland’s Gothic cathedrals, with the spire finally added in 1893, at which point the building was finally considered complete. It is possible to climb the 344 steps to the top of the spire – which was surrounded by scaffolding and workmen during our visit – with views stretching out across central Switzerland to the Bernese Oberland and the Alps.
The 15th century tympanum on the central portal of the cathedral’s western side depicts the Last Judgement in gilded stone, with the damned to the left and the saved to the right – the Mayor of Bern has been saved and the mayor of Zürich damned!
Inside is a lofted triple nave, though opening hours can vary between days and seasons, making it more difficult than you might think to see it.
The Nydeggkirche is a 14th century Bernese church built on the site of a medieval castle, part of the city’s defences near the River Aare.
A tower was added to the church in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, but it became a warehouse following the Reformation, only to return to its intended function by 1566.
