It seems to become a tradition, that I'm getting soaked at least once, when I'm shooting poppy fields. Yesterday it was time for that again. What I saw afterwards, when the sun came out again, was absolutely breathtaking. Everything around me was covered with water drops, which were shining in the sun like diamonds. For me the epitome of pure beauty. To capture this is still something different and when I'm looking at the result I was only rudimentarily successful.
Es scheint sich zu einer Tradition zu entwickeln, dass ich beim Fotografieren von Mohnfeldern mindestens einmal komplett durchweicht werde. Gestern war das mal wieder soweit. Der Anblick danach, als die Sonne wieder schien, war allerdings absolut atemberaubend. Alles um mich herum war überzogen mit Wassertropfen, welche wie Diamanten in der Sonne gefunkelt haben. Für mich, der Inbegriff von absoluter Schönheit. Das festzuhalten ist nochmal etwas ganz anderes und wenn ich mir das Ergebnis so anschaue, scheint es mir nur in Ansätzen gelungen zu sein.

Typical Cormorant pose as it dries out after a dive.
When they dive for a fish, their wings become saturated and heavy which actually helps them to dive quicker. However, they are unable to fly like this so "hang themselves out to dry."

.....blind women who train to become spiritual mediums in Japan. Itako perform rituals tied to communication with the dead. Training for itako traditionally began at a very young age, and included ritualized exposure to cold water. Hundreds of buckets of ice water could be poured on their bodies over the course of a few days. No wonder they prefer to chat up the dead.

Normally I'm here to show you Croydon car parks but here's one from another part of London, in Stratford, in East London, to be precise. For someone that likes to shoot architecture car parks are always an interesting challenge. They are usually very symmetrical with distinguishable lines and shapes. There's always likely to be an abundance of light and shadow because car parks are likely to not be fully enclosed, leaving room for lots of contrasts in tone and light. If I go past a car park I always look for a composition of some kind.
I've subtitled this 'when day becomes night' because this image was a post processing challenge that I set myself. This shot was actually taken in the middle of the day, at 1pm to be exact. I wanted to see if I could make it appear as if was taken at 1am instead.

As 2022 draws to a close, I am looking forward to turning the page on this year, which has been a difficult one for me, and starting the new chapter that is 2023.

I was shooting at Britannia Beach in Squamish with a friend. We were trying to get long exposures of the old pylons in Howe Sound, where there used to be a pier. Unfortunately, it was very low tide and it just wasn't working. So I put my 6 stop ND filter on my lens and did a few ICMs. So this is a very short LE/ICM (1 second) of the pylons, the water, the rocks, the mountains in the distance and the clouds. (But you could tell all that, right? :) )
I have been enjoying creating abstracts in camera lately.

What happens to large structures that become derelict? No, this is not about 'me', but who is responsible or can you just be allowed to let something decompose irrespective of how it affects others or the environment? This may be a wreck in a better state than the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach harbour. Apparently it is at risk of sinking as there are no bilge pumps to drain the lower compartments and they are corroding and weakening. But who can afford the hundreds of millions that might be required to replace the weakened parts and keep it floating? The current owners seem to be suggesting it's not their problem. If it sinks, will they just leave someone else to pay the bills and deal with the wreck? It's a bit big.

Wow, I'm really glad to make this guy's acquaintance for the first time, especially because it will become my favorite Skipper butterfly... the Long-tailed Skipper, with that gorgeous iridescent turquoise back between it's wings! This caterpillar stage is hardly a wallflower in it's own right!
Nesting GHO's have become an annual event at Brazo Bend, but this year the birds were much lower than in the past few years. It was nice not having the lens pointed straight up. I made it to this nest only a few times, but was happy to get a few keepers and had a great time. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 3/2021.
