This Peruvian endemic is a large hummingbird with a long, forked tail. Males have colorful green and purple gorgets; the crown coloration of males varies by subspecies. Bearded Mountaineers inhabit dry montane scrub, bush-filled and lightly wooded areas, rocky outcrops, and gorges. They are rather cautious and are usually subordinate to other hummingbirds. Bearded Mountaineers either cling to or hover around flowers and continuously open and close their tails as they feed on nectar. Although Bearded Mountaineers are much sought after by birders, very little is known about the natural history of this attractive species. Very hard to photograph btw, but thanks to our guide Fisher Chavez, I was able to get a decent photo. I hope you appreciate it.

Thanks a lot for your visits, comments, faves, invites, etc. Very much appreciated!

Lovely Male here took deep in a Suffolk fen.

The Bearded Helmetcrest is a true treasure of Colombia. This fellow lives near the active volcano at almost 14,000 ft. They are large with thick feathers to survive in these extreme conditions feeding on the small flowers thriving there.

aka Bearded Tit. (M)

This species is a wetland specialist, breeding colonially in large reed beds by lakes or swamps. It eats reed aphids in summer, and reed seeds in winter, its digestive system changing to cope with the very different seasonal diets.

Often having to take grit in order to help digestion.

The bearded reedling is a species of temperate Europe and Asia. It is resident, and most birds do not migrate other than eruptive or cold weather movements. It is vulnerable to hard winters, which may kill many birds. The English population of about 500 pairs is largely confined to the south and east with a small population in Leighton Moss in north Lancashire. In Ireland a handful of pairs breed in County Wexford. The largest single population in Great Britain is to be found in the reedbeds at the mouth of the River Tay in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, where there may be in excess of 250 pairs.

Other Breeding areas include Norfolk and Somerset and Alkborough Flats, lincolnshire.

Add a 'Jolly Roger' and a cutlass and he could give Johnny Depp a run for his money

Poor light and uncooperative birds limited our opportunities

Luckily this guy did manage a few seconds in the open., although at a distance

Nice to see a few Beardies around in the early sunshine this morning

An interesting cloudscape.

So happy to capture a Bearded Reedling as I have been after one for ages, they are really hard to see, as you can see always hidden in the reeds lol. Its not a great shot but very exciting for me :-)

After 2 hours in the reed I was lucky to detect this rare bird.
