Sunset at Cannon Beach, Oregon
Another day, another beach sunset. Well, technically the same sunset, since this photo was taken just 3 minutes after the bright orange of the previously posted “Intermezzo”. But the sky changed so dramatically in those few minutes that it almost felt like an entirely different sunset.
As the sun slipped behind the veil of distant fog, the intensity of the orange rapidly faded and the whole beach became awash in pastels. As I stood there watching, enveloped in the soft light, it felt like drifting into a dream.
I usually try to take photos without people in them, but it was difficult here since many others were out enjoying a gorgeous summer sunset. And as I looked through the photos later, I was drawn to this one and felt like the running child actually added something to the photo. Forever frozen in motion, that silhouette somehow for me captured the essence of the transience of beauty and the ephemerality of these moments.

Sunset, Cannon Beach, Oregon
Last night’s sunset, from the opening notes of golden glow to the final fade of dusky pink and purple, was an ever changing melody of sky, as the clouds and colors shifted from minute to minute. Based on time stamps on my photos, this brief moment where the sun looked as though it were falling through the clouds and everything was awash in red and orange hues, lasted less than three minutes, but seemed to stretch on much longer when measured in “beach sunset time”.
Cannon Beach is a very popular place to watch the sunset, so I didn’t have the beach to myself, but as I walked barefoot on the soft sand, inhaling the salty scent of the sea, and occasionally wading into the toe-chilling water, the other beachgoers slowly receded into the background until I felt as though I was alone with the sky and the moment was mine to get lost in.
There are many little pocket coves and undeveloped beaches such as this in Jamaica. I know one near Black River on the south side of the island that's beautiful, secluded and great for swimming. This one is in Trelawny, an area on the fabled north coast of Jamaica just east of Falmouth, about halfway between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.
