The great thing about this scanner for lomokino is that you can get the full "height" of three frames by partially sliding the neg holder between ratchet stops. My lab's scans (or an Ion scan at one of the "stops") crops the top of frame 1 and the bottom of frame 4 so neither are completely usable.

I scanned a whole lomokino roll while watching #bbcqt last night - including spending 20 mins trying to write a killer tweet. It would probably only take 15 mins if concentrating.

Globalisation beckons: UK finally exports more to #China than Eire via @CityAM #Labour fail #bbcnews #skynews #bbcqt ow.ly/rJiS3 SLOWLY but surely, Britain is rebalancing its trade.

I like the way how The Black and White Minstrel Show was dropped by the BB-fucking-C, years ago, but the vibe and thinking behind it, if it's not in many parts of the UK, is alive and well in the Middle Ages in Weaver's Wharf, Kidderminster. Sometimes I get the vibe that, to appease the animals, here, I should dance on the tables, like that bloke out of The Seventh Seal, then go home and update my status, saying that the mocha was really very nice, today, at Caffe-Fucking-Nero, the meet-ups were very civilised and sophisticated, like, and leave it at that. Yeah, man: Here really does comes everybody, the way they always did.

Maybe if the BB-fucking-C covered anything like this on #bbcqt, then that might become all 'social media' 'hip' with the mainstream-social-media cliques of Social Media 1.0? Maybe that's where the UK 'Social Media' evolution/assimilation/submission is going to be 'sprung'. It really wouldn't surprise me and I don't think many of these people running around saying they're all that would really see the irony or tragedy in any of it. Why should they? Fucking shit, man, what about all their powerpoints? Can't let that shit go to waste. No sir! Start as you mean to go on, eh. Unfuckingbelievable.

I dunno. Maybe I should shut up and just get a psychosocial chess set and play psychosocial survival to the end, with a psychosocial reaper or weaver or summat, in a cultural and physical place that's so insistent on cramping my vibe, so very, very often. Who knows what I should do, but, in the meantime, I come down town more through force of habit, than anything. Maybe I'll just start staying in bed. What else is there to do if you don't want to get dragged down by the mainstream and Kidderminster mindset? Go online, on the 'social media' networks? You're having a fucking laugh, ain't yer?

Wassup with Social Media 1.0? Well, it's a sell out, for a start, something I think was always going to happen because mainstream ideas and thinking have been so embedded in the world around us for so long. That should change and maybe if someone, somewhere - maybe me, maybe someone else - says what I'm trying to get across, here, you never know.

I can imagine what most people involved at all sorts of levels of social media might make of this. Dublin John, earlier, for example, came out with what many people embedded in mainstream culture might say: 'it takes many people to make up a world'. This is true, but if people don't know who they are and have a poor grasp of their world, addressing that would not lead to the kind of populace Dublin John envisioned from what I was saying.

It isn't easy talking about all the stuff I want to talk about in terms of how I think social media should regain what it should've been. I'm talking with lots of people who are rooted in framing everything in mainstream terms. Even with people who want to get it and are open to what I'm trying to say to them, I'm finding it tough, sometimes.

I took this picture ages ago, now, in the town's Roland Hill Centre, where, years ago, when I was a child, I caught a middle-aged man whacking off in the toilets' urinals, a man who just carried on wanking, even knowing that a child had seen what he was up to. They've got a statue of Roland Hill in front of the Town Hall, here. He came here ages ago, or lived here or was born here and he made a stamp in London or summat, so they stuck a statue up of him. The trouble with his work, is what stamp would get to what address to address the culture and mindset of Kidderminster? Maybe, instead of a statue of Roland Hill, they should have one of that wanker in mid-flight from years ago, and move it even closer to the Town Hall. Maybe then, the powers that be round here would get some sort of message that they're also fundamentally a bunch of wankers, part of a mess because they think within that mess, while really thinking they're above it all, that they've got it all sussed and that the 'good' times really are comin' back to Kiddy. Fuck yeah, man!

While yet another day in Kidderminster is winding down, I'm wondering whether I maybe should join the Gold Rush in current 'Social Media'. It seems to be pretty much everywhere, in terms of the underlying mainstream motivations and incentives. The very few people who are disappointed with how things are going are getting demoralised. What's a pity here, especially, is that the situation's so shit across the board, that even these people, who'd love to stick it to the mainstream have found themselves surrounded with the mainstream mindset, and think they can't do anything significant about it. Are they supposed to speak out publicly, do they have an eye on the power-brokers at the top of what shouldn't be in the first place: a social media 'scene'? Chances are, they'd be frozen out somehow, because that scene, no matter what lies they tell themselves and other people, is mainstream to its core.

I looked at my Flickr stats before starting to write this and I was actually disappointed enough to suggest that mainstream thinking is pretty influential across the board and I'm not independent enough of the gold rush, yet, perhaps, if I really want to do what I think I need to do.

This taps into what I've heard from quite a few people, who've expressed dissatisfaction with Facebook, for example. Facebook, I think, is failing, partly because, although the people who run it have some great, disruptive ideas that fly in the face of the mainstream, it's not enough and their basic drives and incentives, I'm sure, are mainstream to the core, which is why I think it's struggling in many ways, despite the numbers, which should mean little, anyway. The content's usually abysmal and the thinking of most of its users hasn't really tapped into what social media should be about. But Facebook is dominated by mainstream ideas with far too much content directly and indirectly influenced by the mainstream media.

Similar processes of mainstream dominance in terms of content, relationships, information and communication has meant that too many of the social networks I see have done nothing to make the most of the early buzz that took place when many people hooked up on the networks for the first time, years back. I think they blew it and I think they always were going to. Lessons need to be learned about why, by people who really do give a shit about what this technology could achieve, away from the gold rush, mainstream, PR bullshit people at the top of the social media hierarchy, in the UK, at least.

From what I'm seeing, especially on the ground, any hopes of even the people who preach about digital and social inclusion are a joke, especially, again, when you figure out what many people 'in charge' are all about: who they are, their background that they haven't quite figured out, their cliquish vibe, their thinking, what they must dream about when their conscious mind can't mask it, even to themselves, that they really are mainstream to the core and that will surely always come out in the wash, somehow, even if that information doesn't reach mainstream social media people in a way that could make them think about it, with the upshot being that people who really need to be reached, out there, to give social media the shot up the arm I think it needs, will figure that out, somehow, sooner or later, sussing what too many of these people are ultimately all about.

There are people out there who really do want to change things. I think they're great people, but the sad thing is that I think their approaches are wrong because the mainstream still has an impact even with them. I can't say much about that, because no-one would really listen, and even if they did, I'm likely to be casually dismissed with a mainstream reaction. I could do without it. So could social media.

I dunno. I try to keep away from the Vulture Shops in Kidderminster, these days. I've had my say, to the punters and the vultures, and if no-one here hears that, I can't do much that wouldn't probably result in a vibe that may end in me being busted for not, essentially, being conservative, limiting, backward and mainstream. And the sad thing is that, just as I think I'm alone in Kidderminster in really thinking this, I think I may be alone in social media in saying what I'm saying publicly and really meaning it.

Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? Not sure. There's no money in it for me or power or fame or anything like that. That's all mainstream crap that's part of the problem, anyway. Trouble is, if I say what it's all about for me here, or pretty much anywhere, chance are any audience will go all mainstream, sooner or later, so, for now, I might just keep it to myself for a bit.

That's a problem for someone like me, who's into, or at least tries to be, so many, though by no means all, of the ideas behind open-source while also being into just about everything that should be 'social media'. But is that a problem with me or is it down to the current social media environment. I think I know, but draw your own conclusions and think about what those conclusions may really say about you.

Is there anything I could do about it? Apart from dumping a few things online, I'm not sure. In Weavers Wharf, now, I'm trying to cut myself off from all but essential communication with the animals stuck in the Middle Ages. It looks like the only way to manage this. Even though I'm getting my kicks from taking the piss out of them, occasionally, there are quite a few I think about in a different way. Most of them have been dragged into an ugly vibe that they can't figure out. But when you're in the jungle, sometimes it really is a case of kill or be killed. Anything has consequences, here, and that will, too, but I've got to watch something like TV, now and again, and Animal Planet can be a buzz to watch. I'm thinking long-term, though, about what social media should be and not what I currently think it is.

I'm pretty certain, now, that nothing can buck the trends that are asserting the age-old cultural practises in Kidderminster yet again. Any direct attempt at communication really is futile and would be like a tragic romantic within an abusive partnership who, blinded by love or old, mainstream ideas about things, just can't figure out that their relationship is doomed, and probably was from the outset, because it's all about the abuse of power.

I'm cool with that, because this gives me an independence I think I need, a separation from the attempts by some quite damaged and damaging people to waste no time in trying to apply a hierarchy based on fantasy, whatever the psychosocial effects on me or even them, because they think it does them good, somehow. I've got to have more self-respect than to go along with that and, because I can see a lesson there for social media, I going to apply a similar approach there. It might do me and, one day, other people, the world of good.

Working for inthenews.co.uk I get to do some pretty cool things sometimes - but I think going to the protests yesterday topped the lot. It was a really long day, but worth it to be there watching history in the making. What came across most, as a journalist, was how much had been learnt from G20 - the police were calmer and only put on riot gear when it was absolutely necessary - and the protestors knew exactly how to get themselves out of a 'kettling' situation - amazing to watch.
