BB 20011 at the yard of ...
Tilburg (NL), 14-11-1986.
In the 1950s, SNCF introduced its first batch of locomotives with three-phase motors. For the electrification of the so-called north-east corridor—the railway between Valenciennes and Thionville—SNCF ordered four types of engines: BB 12000, BB 13000, CC 14000, and CC 14100, all suitable for the 25 kV 50 Hz power system. The CC 14000 class was ordered with three-phase motors.
The CC 14001–14020 were built by Oerlikon between 1955 and 1959 and were intended for hauling freight trains. They were rated at 2,640 kW with a maximum speed of 60 km/h!
However, the engines were not successful—they were complicated and unreliable, and all were retired from service in 1981.
Nevertheless, in early 1976, one of the traction motors from CC 14003 was used for testing asynchronous three-phase motors combined with new technology. The CC 14003 was coupled to a coach containing technical equipment to transform the overhead power for the asynchronous traction motor.
In 1982, SNCF conducted tests with synchronous technology for locomotives. BB 15055 was withdrawn from regular service and converted into BB 10004 for this purpose.
Around the same time, BB 15007—which had already been converted into BB 7003 as a test engine for the later BB 7200 class in the 1970s—was used a second time as a test engine, now numbered BB 10003 with asynchronous motors.
The trials with BB 10004 were successful and led to an order for new SNCF locomotives, known as the Sybic, or BB 26000 class.
After the tests, BB 10004 returned to regular service as BB 15055.
To conduct further tests with the new synchronous technology, two engines from an order of BB 22200 locomotives were, immediately after construction at the Alsthom plant in Belfort, withdrawn and sent to Hellemmes to be converted into pré-Sybic locomotives. These were registered as BB 20011 and BB 20012.
In 1986, the Alsthom engine BB 20011 came to the Netherlands for tests on the Dutch network. However, the trials never resulted in an NS order for synchronous three-phase technology.

Another shot of a Black Backed Woodpecker.
This one seemed to stand up better to the close crop as I had difficulty finding shots where he's not pecking and getting movement in spite of a fast shutter speed.
