I'm just gonna take off my glasses ;-)
Seen in a 1963 issue of Architectural Review is this very period piece - bathroom fittings by the long established Shanks who were based at the Tubal Works in Barrhead, then Renfrewshire, in Scotland. The company was formed by John Shanks, a local plumber, who in 1866 set up the works to manufacture taps and fitting and in 1904, with the move to the new and larger Tubal Works, began manufacturing the ceramics such as toilets, baths and basins as seen here. In 1969 they merged with rivals Armitage, to form Armitage Shanks, and the combined company became part of the Blue Circle Industries Group in 1980. The Barrhead plant closed in 1992.
The suite seen here is one of the variations on avacado green that was very popular in the day but it is seen against a rather '50s style decor. During the 1960s interior decor fashion, even in bathrooms, would become a little livlier even if the green colours were still a popular choice.

functions as an administrative centre for the city water company and houses a small, quirky museum with a collection of tiles, faucets, old toilets, bidets and pipes.

This bathroom, depicting a bathtub, sink, toilet, and scale, was an image used in a 1918 Norwester magazine advertisement for G. C. Glass Plumbing and the products they carried. The company was created in 1908 as Glass and McCollom Plumbing and is now considered the Grandview Heights business with the longest continuous operation in the community. The business is now simply known as Glass Plumbing.

Annoyingly, I messed up the focus (hey - it looked fine in the viewfinder) and now the toiled is gone so I cant reshoot this.
I've been looking at this faucet for years but this morning, I quite literally saw it in a different light.
I am getting a new floor in the bathroom today. Right now it looks pretty ugly. Tomorrow it will be beautiful again :-)
I sneaked in while the workmen were away at lunch and took some pictures.

we travel, at this point, in the summer, since that is when neal has his school holiday (he's an 8th grade geography teacher).
this summer we are planning another adventure (last year africa...this year destination can be anywhere world wide!)
we usually try to swap houses....a fun way to really live in a community and be part of where we are as opposed to "just tourists".
thought you might enjoy getting a peek at where i live and where i make my art.
Within steps of our front door you are minutes away by public transportation from the cultural, historical and intellectual excitement of Washington DC. Being off the Interstate Highway you are an hour away from many of the beautiful rural and historic towns of Virginia and Maryland, to include excellent hiking in the Appalachian Mountains and Shenandoah National Park.
Our home is a bright, comfortable, modern, small brick colonial style townhouse recently renovated in an open loft like style. It is set in a treed courtyard - in a long established community now designated a historic site. The type of place where the streets are full of people jogging and others walking their children and dogs - a safe place where people are friendly.
There is a living room dining room combination on the first floor together with a modern granite topped kitchen (glass top stove, microwave, dishwasher and garbage disposal, etc.) The kitchen door leads to a private, enclosed brick patio perfect for morning coffee or outdoors dining.
On the second floor there is a master bedroom with queen sized bed and a full bath with tub and shower. The small second room, which leads to an art studio, is used, as our grand-daughter’s play room.
The third floor is a full level art studio.
The lower floor - reached from the kitchen - leads to a large den with cable HDTV/DVD and includes an office area with computer. On this level is a second full bathroom with shower and toilet and washer and dryer. It also includes a folding tread mill.
The entire house has ac, with ceiling fans in the bedroom and studio. There are hardwood floor on four levels. The house has contemporary furniture and is excitingly decorated with modern art.
There is a full sized aero inflatable bed that can be set up in any of the rooms for children or other guests.
Time to relax - a large community swimming pool and two tennis courts are just behind the house. A five minute walk takes you to a large shopping center that can meet all your needs from two supermarkets, a coffee cafe, pharmacy, dry cleaners, beauty shop, bank and so forth. A twenty minute walk takes you to a local entertainment center with several movie theaters and a large variety of restaurants (including one of the best in the Washington area) and a wonderful bakery.
