Ron and I were plagued by an aggressive Green Heron, who, whenever the kingfisher arrived at the snag, would possessively chase it off. We called it "The Bastard" which inspired this composite which I call "Bastard Landing". Wishful thoughts may have been behind the making of this composite.

"LITTLE BASTARD"

Iris spuria is a species of the genus Iris, part of the subgenus Limniris and the series Spuriae. It is a rhizomatous perennial plant, from Europe, Asia and Africa. It has purple or lilac flowers, and slender, elongated leaves. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions and hybridized for use in the garden.
Due to the wide distribution of the species, it has many different common names, including; 'Spurious Iris', ‘false iris', ‘bastard iris', 'blue iris' (in England), ‘butterfly iris' (also in England), ‘meadow marsh iris', ‘iris steppe', ‘iris des steppes' (in France), ‘Steppen-Schwertlilie' (in Germany), and 'dansk iris' (in Sweden). and 'salt iris' (also in Sweden).
Another is 'seashore iris', but this probably applies to Iris spuria subsp. maritima. Also 'salt iris', and 'salt marsh iris', but this applies to Iris halophila (formerly a subspecies).
Iridaceae is a family of plants in order Asparagales, taking its name from the irises, meaning rainbow, referring to its many colours.
I was looking closely at the little "bastard cabbage" (?) flowers and saw a dark spot, which turned out to be a little spider. Some crab spiders have the ability to change colors to match their flowers. Apparently this spider doesn't...
An unassuming little flower with an unfortunate name from a visit to Horn Prairie in Illinois a few weeks back. This site includes 29 acres of untilled prairie on about 40 acres total, with a plant diversity that exceeds 600 species. It's a real jewel.
Logistically awkward for me to catch the sunrise here on the day as it would mean a back and forth journey to fit my itinerary, so stick with plan A and hope for something nice when I get there.
Well I had completed part one of my journey and was on my around to this location when I could see the beautiful sun exposed in clear part of the sky and I know that time was not on my side as the sun rose further into the atmosphere!
By the time I had reached the location the clouds were covering the sun however that wasn't going to stop me from taking a few photos which have been few and far between throughout the summer.

I took this in the middle of the night on Ed and Frans balcony.
I loved both of the cats, but they were incredibly suicidal all the time.
They actually fought and chased each other on this railing, and as you can see its pretty damn fucking high. My heart always skipped a beat when I saw them doing this, but Ed told me its OK.
loco gatos potones!

It's my first photo of the species, because I dislike them for being invasive and making life difficult for the native birds. But this one looks too good not to take a picture...

For Game of Thrones fans:
Tollymore Forest Park, County Down, made its mark as the Haunted Forest, where the White Walkers began their march into the realm of men. These 600 hectares hold ancient redwoods as well as Gothic stone arches – the remnants of an 18th century estate. The ‘bastard of Bolton’ hunted Theon here, and it's where the Starks discover the direwolves. Listen carefully, you might still hear their howls.
