In the old downtown sections of Toronto, home garages can only be accessed by laneways that are located behind the rows of homes. (I guess they didn't take cars into account when they first built these homes in the 1860s.) The garage doors become a utopia for graffiti artists.but the city got wise, hired the best graffiti artists to paint these garage doors with their creations such that the laneways are now graffiti free.

A new Michael Jordan? (explored)

I thought I should take some photos of my frogs again and so I took a few of them to the park yesterday morning for a photoshoot. For this capture of the basketball player I placed him on the seat of one of the spring riders on the park's playground which at the time was deserted as it was early. I chose this spot mainly because of the colour. :)

Cardiff Met Archers vs Nottingham Wildcats, Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) game on Saturday 14th October 2017. Game was played at the Archers Arena, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in Cardiff, Wales (Cyrmu), United Kingdom, during the 2017-18 season.

About the photograph.

This is the American born Alyesha Lovett playing for Nottingham Wildcats, taking a free throw and shooting for the hoop.

Most of the Cardiff Met Archers players are seen having a quick chat, likely to be talking about their game plan, in the background and their faces partial hidden by the glass backboard.

To the right of the photo, is the Cardiff Met Archers player number 6, British born Stefanie “Stef” Collins, watching Lovett doing the shooting.

Stef Collins went on to become the head coach of Archers in the 2020s.

This shot was taken with a 28-200mm lens having a maximum of f 3.8, and from the seating on an upper level. The view of the basketball court is partial blocked by the backboard at one end of the court.

At that time, the arena did not have strong bright indoor lights, unlike the newly redeveloped arena as seen in my photos of the 2022-23 season, so I had to make do with low light levels, even when pushing the ISO speed to the camera’s maximum.

The reason why my later photos looked better is because I used a fast 50mm lens, shot from courtside, in brighter lights.

The game ended with Archers 73 – 78 Wildcats.

About the teams.

The Wales based Cardiff Met Archers started in 1999, as a university basketball team. They have about 19 different teams, range from Under-10s to Seniors, and men’s teams as well as women’s teams.

The women’s senior team (seen here in the photograph) is the only team in a top-level elite franchise-based league. They joined the Women’s British Basketball League when it was first set up in 2014, and to date, are still in the WBBL.

The Nottingham Wildcats is an English women’s basketball team based in Nottingham, England, and was founded in 1976. As a successful team in the English Women’s Basketball League, the Wildcats became one of the founding members of the WBBL.

They had two Championships in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, and also won the WBBL Cup during the 2017-18 season.

The Women’s British Basketball League is a top-level franchised based basketball league in the United Kingdom, and a sister to the men’s British Basketball League (BBL). It was announced in June 2014 and started with the 2014-15 season.

Before I continue to share the rest of my photos from my SOFLA trip I wanted to share this shot of a mural in LA memorializing Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna.

I was in Florida on the anniversary of Kobe and his daughters tragic death which was already two years ago, January 26th 2020.

Although I did not know Kobe personally, like many others I watched him play his heart out for his entire career and was hurt by his death. I cried a few times during that week, it was heartbreaking to say the least. It was during that moment, which felt like to me, the beginning of the end of the world as we knew it. Soon after his death the pandemic hit and changed the entire world's definition of "new normal"

Kobe was a student of the game, an assassin with a basketball, a stand-up man, a teacher on and off the court, a legend in the game and in his personal life. His daughter Gianna was young, beautiful and a super talent on the rise following in her father's basketball footsteps. Both gone too early.

Huge RIP to Kobe & Gianna

About this photograph.

During my late teenager years, while attending college studying graphic design, with an on-the-job work experience training for a professional photographer, in my spare time, I joined a local basketball club in my hometown.

Usually we would be training, learning how to do basketball, and often have friendly games. Sometimes once in a while, the club have a fixture game with other local teams. A few of us, myself included, are not members of the team, so often we would sit out on the sideline and watch the games.

Then one day, as I was aware of when the next local fixture was due, I decided to bring my Minolta X-700 35mm film camera and 50mm lens with me, as I decided I wanted to try and do basketball photography.

My preferred black and white film is always the Ilford brand. I can’t be sure if I used the FP4 or HP5 for this photo, as it was taken like over 30 years ago, and I lost all my notes.

Up until this point, I had shot landscape, still life, people who posed for camera, parked vehicles, and many nearly stationary subjects. This was my first time shooting fast sports action, so it was a new experience for me.

It is possible I could have shot those photos with Ilford FP4, which is rated for ISO 125/22° and because of this, ended up using lower shutter speed, hence they all had blurry movements.

I developed and printed the photographs myself while at college. It is possible that I could have done this at a rented darkroom under a café. I can’t be sure where did I do the darkroom work.

In 2021, the photographs were scanned to my computer using a Brother multifunction printer/copier/scanner/fax machine, for uploading to my Flickr account.

I don’t remember where exactly this was taken, I think it was at Dyson Perrins school, in Malvern. At that time, I didn’t drive, so I often walked half hour from home to get there.

This has been a long time coming, and I'm proud with the end result. Since it is tje thirstiest time of the year, there was sure to be some Christmas themed characters, and it won't stop at LeBron, I used a Basketball players head as the base, I made sure to match the shapes of his parts on that figure from the ad, the more difficult parts were definitely the hood, torso and soda can, I couldn't exactly get all of that detail, but it looks pretty close.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending a basketball game, invited by my daughter and son-in-law, who is a former basketball player and still a passionate supporter of the sport. The atmosphere was lively, with plenty of energy from the crowd and the players. The show around the game reminded me of a toned-down version of an American football event, but overall, it was a fun spectacle to experience.

Photographing the game, however, was a real challenge. If you’re not used to capturing such a fast-paced sport, it’s tough to get the timing and angles right for an interesting shot. That said, I managed to snap a few decent ones!

As for the game itself, it was a tough evening for the home team. The Giants suffered a painful defeat against the Kortrijk Spurs (113-67).

I hadn't seen him in over a year—he doesn't live in my neighbourhood. We met during the first year of the pandemic, back when he was about to start middle school... now, three years on, he's about to enter high school, and even he is surprised at how time flies. He's really matured on the fact that 2020, as bad as it was, actually turned out pretty good in terms of the new things he got to do, and the new people he met, like me. That's exactly how I feel about 2020.
