Flower of a barrel cactus (not sure of species) at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona.
I use this for a prop but it is hardly seen, mainly a height adjustment on the photo shoot table, but for Smile on Saturday, it may not be funny funny but it is different chuckle funny when one first sees this barrel used to package cigars, it brought a smile to me when I found it thinking of what I could use it for.
I liked the yellow barrels in the forefront, the colour was striking. Beautiful Wells harbour stretches behind, with a yacht, birds and marshes. The barrels were a temporary fence - gone next time I was there. HFF!

Barrel cactus buds typically start to bloom in April with a bright yellow or orange flower. Pink and red varieties also exist but occur less frequently. The flowers only appear on the very top of the plant. As the flowers begin to wilt in early May, they may change color. A late summer desert rainstorm can produce a late bloomer as shown in the photo of the orange flowered variety (it bloomed two days after a rain storm in mid August and then continued to bloom right through the end of September).
This is the same farm as yesterday's pic, just a different truck. I couldn't have asked for a better day to tour a bunch of abandoned farms east of Innisfail, Alberta last week.

Not long after taking this shot, the surfer walked past me as he took a short cut across the rocks to get back in the lineup. He was bubbling with infectious excitement as he grinned hello and raved about how good the break was this morning. Good times all round.
