An exercise in bar length, to see what a shorter bar will mean to joint movement. As shown, to achieve a perfect "nested joint", the joint won't unfold without detaching in one of the sockets.
If LEGO had simply rounded that hard edge on the outside of the receptacle, it would have been possible. A longer bar will be needed, methinks.
From the feedback I've reveived on my cannon ball w/pin, it appears there is an inrerest in seeing it used in a mixel-ball hub (#14704 "Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Ball Receptacle Small on Side"), but with some alterations.
Some have suggested I pierce the ball, to allow any length of bar to attach. However, without a bar molded tot the ball, you can't remove the ball from the ball receptacle without a knife!
So, I'm wondering if a barbell design might work, and if so, what length of bar would be most useful (expressed in terms of plate thicknesses)

I don't know why I wanted this set, I just did, & now I have it. Unfortunately, there's a problem with one set of barbells. The black ones should have a long middle piece & also, the little pieces that keep the weights on are missing. I have emails out to see if I can get a replacement, but I'm not optimistic, & I'm not going to send it back anywhere. Anyway, this is what the 5 sets are:
1. Red dumbbell
2. Blue dumbbell
3. Blue iron array
4. Black barbell
5. Silver barbell
Of all the items I built for Esquire, this barbell was clearly the easiest, LOL. The only challenge was to round up enough slopes in medium blue! (Note: I considered doing the the ends with medium blue curved slopes, but the ends of the actual barbell are octagonal in shape.)
