This collection of books aren't just books in New Mexico. These collections are make shift books from original books that are renamed to fit the name of a local bar and grill called the Library. When we first arrived back in New Mexico, we were very surprised to see this collection of books.
While walking the streets of downtown Detroit, Michigan, one evening I came across this interesting alley scene behind a bar . . . A mason jar holding up the window, beer cans on the ledge, and a street sign in the window. As I was attempting to gain focus, I noticed someone had arrived at the door and was looking at me. In my haste I blurred the shot. [The shot is decades old and I had a print made of it way back when, but lost the original negative. This is a digital shot of the print].
Hard to believe this place was still open as of September 2020. It's been for sale since even before that. The north-facing motel rooms are still occupied by long-term renters. The south-facing motel rooms appear to have been recently shuttered.
There is still a sign a block away on the main road (US Route 101) pointing travelers here. The sign still looks imminently ready for business.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many bars & restaurants have been required by law to limit their capacity or utilize outdoor space if social distancing is not achievable inside. In spring of 2020, under Governor Tony Evers’ "Safer at Home" order, bars were required to shut down from the end of March through May. These photos document this chapter in Madison’s history. Many establishments have withstood the trial, but for others this was last call.
