Bamboo

Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, who is of the fourth generation of one of Japan’s most renowned bamboo artist families, is known for his large-scale site-specific installations. With his academic sculpture education and the handcraft he learned from his family, he adapts traditional bamboo work to a contemporary approach and form, forcing the limits of his material to the utmost with respect to aesthetics and resilience.

In his work depicting the motions and forms of nature, Chikunsaai IV questions the contemporary human being’s relation with nature. The organic material he uses reminds the spectators of the sophisticated stories of Asian mythology, inviting them to become part of a tale. In his sculptures, we see the elegance of centuries old Japanese culture in its simplest form. For the site-specific installation he built for Odunpazarı Modern Museum (OMM), the artist used the five main constituents of nature as a theme: Water, fire, air, earth and humanity.

—————

Odunpazarı Modern Museum is a cross-cultural platform where modern and contemporary art from Turkey and abroad is exhibited with a universal perspective.

Located in the historical, Ottoman-era neighborhood of Odunpazarı in Eskişehir, the OMM building was designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates (KKAA), the world-renowned architectural office.

OMM was founded by Eskişehir-born architect and art collector Erol Tabanca.

Most of the bamboo forests are usually planted by farmers here for business purposes. For example, disposable chopsticks are made by bamboo, and my favorite bamboo shoots soup. :-)

Have a nice weekend my friends.

平林寺 もみじ山 夕陽に照らされた映り込みの塀が赤くて驚きました。

I fell in love with bamboo when I was in Japan — the textures, the patterns, the way the sun streamed through, the dancing shadows in the breeze… Every view was different and yet endlessly the same, like the sea.

This bamboo has "walked" some three metres in my garden since I have lived here, including crossing a concrete path one metre wide.

Phyllostachys aureosulcata is a cold hardy running bamboo with a distinctive yellow stripe in the culm groove (or sulcus) that is often grown as an ornamental. Several forms and cultivars of this species exist in a variety of culm color patterns. Phyllostachys aureosulcata f. spectabilis (showy yellow groove bamboo) reverses the colors of the typical form with yellow culms and a green sulcus.

This is a (already used) bamboo whisk (a so-called "chasen", 5 cm wide) - a tool for traditional preparation of macha tea.

The matcha powder (ground leaves of certain green tea varieties, the Tencha) and hot water (70 - 85 °C) are mixed and then frothed up whith the chasen - the movement of the chasen should follow the letter "W" or "M" (kind of zigzag movement).

The part in the centre of the chasen is called Chajimi :)

„M“ folgen (Art Zick-Zack-Bewegung).

Arashiyama's beautiful bamboo groves. A must experience when visiting Kyoto, Japan.

Wikipedia: Lethe europa, the bamboo treebrown, is a species of Satyrinae butterfly found in Asia.

At San Diego Botanic Garden, you can visit the largest living collection of bamboo in North America!

The Bamboo Garden at SDBG is special because it is the first garden planted as a collection. In 2013, the American Public Garden Association (APGA) granted official accreditation of our collection, recognizing it as a key resource for bamboo research and preservation. Our Bamboo Garden features over 100 different species and cultivars of bamboo from around the world.

Many people know that bamboo grows in China and that it’s eaten by panda bears. However, bamboo grows naturally on every continent except Antarctica and Europe! There are over 1000 different species of bamboo, but almost half of the world’s bamboo is threatened with habitat destruction. LIke any habitat loss, losing bamboo habitat will result in the loss of panda bears and many other animals around the globe that depend on bamboo.

What many people may not know is that bamboo is a grass, in fact they are giant grasses! They’re in the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae. Each bamboo stem completes its growth in a year, and can grow several feet per day! Some bamboo grow as tall as trees, and even though they’re grasses, they can grow into a forest. Bamboo stems or culms are hollow, like the grass in a lawn. Trees form solid trunks which may take decades to reach maturity.

Bamboos are evergreen perennial flowering plants in the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae. In bamboo, as in other grasses, the internodal regions of the stem are usually hollow and the vascular bundles in the cross-section are scattered throughout the stem instead of in a cylindrical arrangement. The dicotyledonous woody xylem is also absent. The absence of secondary growth wood causes the stems of monocots, including the palms and large bamboos, to be columnar rather than tapering. Bamboos include some of the fastest-growing plants in the world, due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. Certain species of bamboo can grow 910 mm within a 24-hour period, at a rate of almost 40 mm an hour (a growth around 1 mm every 90 seconds). Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family. Bamboos are of notable economic and cultural significance in South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia, being used for building materials, as a food source, and as a versatile raw product. Bamboo, like wood, is a natural composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio useful for structures. Bamboo's strength-to-weight ratio is similar to timber, and its strength is generally similar to a strong softwood or hardwood timber. 19104
