Boardwalk game - Seaside Heights, New Jersey

The kids are so good at this game. we left with TWO huge stuffed animals they almost popped every one ;)

The fair is coming soon to San Diego. If you were thinking about submitting prints to the photo exhibit the deadline is tomorrow. I've never submitted anything before, but I have been considering submitting one or two images, just to see how it goes. I've always been against paying an entry fee or giving up copyright for photo contests, but I've always enjoyed viewing the exhibit at the fair, and thought it would be cool to have one of my images in the show.

took about 30 balloons to get this shot, my dad poked it with a piano wire to pop it. My "studio" was a black poster board taped to my fence in the backyard. The balloon was resting on a white board i put on top of my garbage can.

Strobist Info: 2 Sb800's on the left. one a little above at 1/20th power and one behind-ish (at low power) to give a little bit of a edge light. Triggered with Nikon CLS. No fancy high speed sync or sound trigger :)

(wire has been removed, used to be above and left poking the balloon)

One's you pop, you can't stop!

I want to say thank you to Danboard Gideon Fernandez (my brother-in-laws friend) for clicking the shutter, good job! His real name is Dan, I just call him Danboard.. Shot this our driveway..

So, going tomorrow to make an appointment to for my tattoo! I think I’ll just let the artist draw a design to extend my first tattoo, the artist’s name is “Tatay Nero Nievo”. He did my 2nd tattoo which is “Freedom” in ambigram. FREEDOM in Filipino (Tagalog) means LAYA, which is my name.. and yes! I’m still Hella Scared of needles!!! even if this is the 4th time(2 tattoo’s 1 tongue ring) I’m going to have a needle poking at my skin. So I need to do this ASAP, before I back out..

Question for the Day: For sure I’m going to create a 365 book in blurb after I finish, but I’m also thinking of creating like a Strobist info kind of book, and the tips and tricks on how I do my shots. The question is, Do you think I should just make 1 book with the 365 days pictures, then have my strobist info, setups, stories behind the shots, and tricks on how I do my thing, OR should I make a separate book for the strobist info stuff?

With that said..

Reflector with blue sheet below subject, for a slighty blue effect on the water which I think didn’t work out the way I wanted it.

Like our hint from yesterday about this week’s launch? Here’s your second clue!

Water balloon, knife dropped into it. Shutter opened....if only it had been that simple!

Balloon Pop game at the carnival. Great for lots of color!

Peachtree Rides Carnival

Roswell, Georgia, USA

Water in a water balloon captured at the moment the balloon burst. The water hasn't had a chance to come apart yet though it did a few milliseconds later. It took five balloons to actually capture the exact moment I was going for. Water is an amazing liquid! Good thing it is so unlike any other liquid!

So is it Fast shutter speed, think fast or you will miss the pop or gee I'm running out of balloons really fast trying to get this shot. I think they all work. Another new thing to try and my daughter had lots of fun popping the balloons.

I've always wanted to try these high speed shots, and always wanted to make use of a 1/8000 shutter (Even though this particular shot is only 1/6400). But without an epic burning laser pointer, we had to resort to using a knife, hence the splash off the left side.

I really have to thank my friends Braden and Devin on this one (and the next couple of shots to come), couldn't have done it without them.

Tastes and smells like a boom.

It's a real shame that the orange one didn't blow, because the arrow would be right in the middle of it if it did. The reason why it missed though isn't because of a bad archer. It's simply because water is an often underestimated force, it's very heavy and obviously more dense than air. A pool of water can even stop or shred a bullet! So it's actually quite a lot of work for a lightweight arrow to get through the balloons without problem.

What happens is that after each balloon, the trajectory/direction of the arrow is changed (Which technically made this a little bit dangerous lol). Another issue is that the clothesline moves when weight is spontaneously lost on one side.

But I really like how you can see the arrow just coming out of the last balloon, and I think that's really cool, so I decided to put this up anyway.

Another interesting thing to think about is just how fast that arrow is going. Gravity acts very quickly, it takes roughly 25ms (this was not calculated using proper physics lol) from when the balloons pop to the water hitting the ground. So for two water balloons to still be in their "balloon shape" and the arrow to almost have passed all 3 balloons, that arrow is moving mighty fast, capturing such a shot is based heavily on luck.

What I don't like is the background, and I wasn't satisfied without all the balloons popping. So oooooobviously I had to change to a wider lenses (since the sun is facing this way, I couldn't shoot from the other side) and try again! (More to come)

Second session popping balloons, tried popping some in my hand. Proved to be difficult considering I had to hold the balloon in one hand and fire the flash and poke the balloon with the other. I had to duct tape the poker onto the flash to achieve this shot.

Nikon D70s_Nikon 85mm f/1.4D_ISO200_f/16.0_5secs_2 flash panels slaved to fire by old flash triggered manually in my hand.
