View across the track as a field races down the Playfair backstretch in front of the horsemen's grandstand, circa 1994??

Turn 4 is a really good location for watching a race at MIS. Had seats in turn 3 for a few years, and that's where you see them coming down the backstretch at over 200mph and dive into turn 3, roll through 4, and pick up the throttle coming out of 4 into the tri-oval on the front stretch.

Hung out with my friends Karen and Ani at the Santa Anita Race Track. I love that 70-200 lense.

The second Jefferson Downs track was a 3/4 mile oval in Kenner with a 7,500 seat grandstand & stables for 1,150 horses that operated from 1971-1992. It closed due to the poor economy and stiff competition with a casino only a mile away. In 1974, jockey James Sibille was shot to death after winning a race here, amid rumors that he had been warned not to win. John Henry broke his maiden here in 1977. Also in 1977, the lights went out during a night race, causing 5 of 10 horses to collide & lose their riders. The last jockey to win a race here was Corey Lanerie, in 1992.

Today, the pricy Gabriel gated community sits on the site, but there is a lakefront jogging and biking trail that runs behind where the backstretch used to be, that is open to the public.

Patrick Baldwin (#52) finds himself wrecked on the backstretch as Danny Hansen (#20) is trapped a lap down by the subsequent yellow.

I couldn't access the road that led you towards the grandstands and the frontstretch. I still got some pretty good shots of the backstretch here from Kentucky Speedway Blvd. There are a lot of power lines running thru the Kentucky Speedway facility. They were buzzing and humming the whole time I was there. It added some extra mood to the thunder rumbling off in the distance.

I picked the winner of the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Reacetrack yesterday. "Line of David" (Wonder why I picked that one, flickrfriends) paid off at 17 to 1 and I had him across the board. He led wire to wire in the 1 1/8 mile race that qualifies him for the Kentucky Derby next month. I'll bet on him in that race too. Go Namesake!

Horses race along the backstretch at the Iroquois Steeplecahse in Nashville today. This was from the first race, and was won by "Bluegrass Summer," the brown horse with the jockey in the yellow cap. This was my first-ever attempt to photograph a horse race.
