Description: The 42nd India Day Parade in New York City was held on August 18th, 2024.
Thousands of people gathered to watch the floats and performances.
A controversial float depicting the Ram Mandir was also included in the lineup. The Ram Mandir is a temple that was inaugurated in India in early 2024. It was built on the site of an ancient mosque which was demolished by a religious mob in 1992. The mob was mobilised by influential politicians by stoking anti-muslim sentiment across the country.
In the lead-up to the India Day Parade, multiple U.S.-based organisations protested against the inclusion of the Ram Mandir float. Groups protesting included the Council on American Islamic Relations, the Indian American Muslim Council and Hindus for Human Rights.
Following the protest, New York City’s mayor Eric Adams also condemned the float.
In response, the organisation behind the float, Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (also known as World Hindu Council of America), released a statement saying that the design of the float was not intended to target any religious group.
