Clun Castle sits high on a natural rocky mound in a loop of the river Clun, on the edge of the small, picturesque town of the same name. Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest to demonstrate the authority of the English monarchy over this part of the border region, the castle and the nearby settlement prospered in the 13th century thanks to the management of the Fitzalan family, but suffered a number of attacks from across the Welsh border. It was used as a hunting lodge in the 14th century, but was increasingly neglected, and by 1539 the castle was reported as ruinous.

Some authorities deem this bird to be the most beautiful in Thailand. It is a very beautiful bird indeed. It is a type of laughingthrush that is usually quite secretive. I saw 2 of them at Doi Lang East right on the Myanmar border. Actually the road goes through Myanmar at several points and I got some birds for my Myanmar list as well. These birds though were being fed at the military checkpoint. If they weren't being fed I doubt I would have seen one!. There are many feral dogs in Thailand and I was surprised to find six of them on this high mountain road. I enjoyed feeding them some bananas and playing with them as well. The army men were taking good care of the dogs I could tell.

Meols was named as such by the Vikings; its original name from the Old Norse for 'sand dunes' was melr, becoming melas by the time of the Domesday Survey.

Impressive archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic period suggest that the site was an important centre in antiquity. Since about 1810, a large number of artefacts have been found relating to pre-Roman Carthage, the Iron Age, the Roman Empire, the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. These include items as varied as coins, tokens, brooches, pins, knives, glass beads, keys, pottery, flint tools, mounts, pilgrim badges, pieces of leather, worked wood and iron tools. They came to be discovered after the beginning of large-scale dredging (to accommodate the needs of the nearby growing seaport of Liverpool) started to cause notable sand erosion along the coastline near Meols. These finds suggest that the site was used as a port as far back as the Iron Age some 2,400 years ago, and was once the most important seaport in the present-day North West England. Thus trading connections are believed to have reached far across Europe. Some of these artefacts are on display locally, at the Museum of Liverpool. In the 1890s the local authorities built the first sea wall. The rapidly eroding coastline was saved, but the sea wall changed the currents and archaeological sites at Meols were buried in the sand. The remains of a submerged forest off Dove Point have now also disappeared but they were visible until the spring of 1982.

In 1835, Berwick was told that its prison in the Town Hall was unsuitable and needed to be replaced. It took sometime to find a site, agree on plans and raise the money to do this. However, this project finally came to fruition with the opening of this building in Wallace Green in 1849 as a Prison. It's history as a prison was relatively short lived as it closed in 1878. However, having cost so much to build, a new use had to be found for it. Initially it was used as a Court house and by Berwick's Police Force, but then in the early 1890s it was purchased by Berwick's

Urban Sanitary Authority, it was converted to office

accommodation and stables were built on the back of the site. A plaque above the main door commemorates the completion of this work in 1892. From then until 2009, the building was used a Council administrative buildings, being eventually sold after 2015 to a local developer, who has converted it to four properties, retaining many of its original features, including some of the prison cells on the top floor.

A trip to Vienna

All those who cannot take a holiday may follow me on a tour through Vienna. Past the famous sights, but perhaps you will also discover sights worth seeing off the beaten track ...

The salt authority used to be an authority that administered salt mining and its trade. This authority has no longer existed for over 200 years, in fact. What has remained is the saying, "Why don't you complain to the Salt Authority" - i.e. to this no longer existing authority, where the hopelessness is clear from the outset !! 😂 Today there is still a locality called 'Salzamt' on Ruprechtsplatz.

The railway bridge over the Sava River in Zagreb. It was without a name for a long time, but it was marked by graffiti with the inscription HENDRIX, which returned again and again every time the city authorities repainted the inscription and returned the bridge to its original appearance. In 2017, the city of Zagreb renamed the bridge after graffiti to "Hedrix's bridge"

CROSSING THE HIGHLANDS: The Bear Mountain Bridge, the southernmost crossing administered by the New York State Bridge Authority, carries US 6 and US 202 across the Hudson River, from Bear Mountain State Park at the northern tip of Rockland County to the northwestern corner of Westchester County. On the western approach, which actually lies in Orange County (the Orange-Rockland border runs diagonally between the toll plaza and the superstructure), the bridge connects to US 9W and the Palisades Interstate Parkway. On the eastern approach, the bridge connects to NY 9D.

Plans for the bridge date as far back as 1868, when the first charter for a railroad bridge was obtained. The initial proposal by General Edward W. Serrell, which was featured in a Harper's Weekly article, employed a suspension span design similar to that of the Brooklyn Bridge. The truss-stiffened deck was to be supported over the Hudson River by four main cables and two masonry towers. Despite three attempts at starting construction, none of them got past the initial stages.

As the twentieth century began, private ferry companies initiated passenger service in the Highlands. When nearby Bear Mountain State Park opened in 1916, it quickly became a popular destination for New Yorkers. Before long, getting to and from the park meant long delays at the ferry terminal, or during nighttime or winter periods, not getting across at all. Even when they were available, ferries crossing the river between Peekskill and Bear Mountain State Park had waits of as much as four hours.

In February 1922, a bill was introduced in the New York State Legislature that authorized the creation of a privately financed entity, the Bear Mountain Hudson Bridge Company, to build a vehicular bridge across the Hudson at Bear Mountain. Under the terms of this bill, the company was given 30 years to build and maintain the bridge and highway approaches on state-owned land, after which time the state would take over the bridge. The most practical location for a bridge was at the narrow entrance to the Highlands. (At that time, there were no fixed vehicular crossings of the Hudson River south of Albany.)
