This Duesenberg (J-490) was bodied by the New York coachbuilding firm of Rollston & Co. in 1932 on Duesenberg's Model J 142-inch "short" chassis. Delivered to its first owner in Chicago, the car has known ownership history from new.

"The Duesenberg Model J was the result of Errett Loban Cord's vision of creating the greatest American vehicle ever produced. It had all the amenities available, lots of power, and carried the Duesenberg's prestigious name. It was introduced to the public at the 1928 New York Auto Show. As was the case with many manufacturers at the time, various coachbuilders were tasked with outfitting the vehicle with various designs and creations. The chassis used for the Model J was a simple ladder frame with solid front and rear axles. They were designed to accommodate all the body types to be created, regardless of size. A revolutionary maintenance system was installed on the Model J that automatically provided lubrication to various parts of the chassis after a period of time. Installed on the dashboard were lights that illuminated after various mileages elapsed informing the driver to perform preventive maintenance on the battery and to change the oil.
The 32-valve, dual-overhead-camshaft eight-cylinder engine was capable of producing 265 horsepower. The 6.9-liter power plant was designed by Fred Duesenberg and constructed by the Lycoming engineer builder. A supercharger was available increasing horsepower even further. A small number of the Model J's were outfitted with the supercharged, and they became known as the Model SJ. A few SJs were modified further through the use of a ram-horn intake which boosted horsepower to an astonishing 400. These very rare examples were dubbed the Model SSJ. A four-speed gearbox was initially offered but was unable to handle the engine's power. It was later replaced with a 3-speed gearbox that was unsynchronized. Ultimately, the Model J was difficult to drive and control due to its size and its horsepower.
Throughout the production life span of the Model J which lasted until 1937, only 481 examples were produced, falling well short of the initially estimated production figures. Part of the reason was the price tag and the economical turmoil the country was facing. The World War and the Great Depression were difficult times for many companies and it was hard to gauge the impact it would have on the sales of the vehicles at the time.
The Model J vehicles were purchased by the rich and the famous. The Model J was truly a paragon that defined style, class, performance, and quality. Their low production figures and the various body styles produced by coachbuilders ensure their exclusivity and their ability to fetch top dollar even in modern times. It is not uncommon to see a Model J sold at auction for more than a million dollars.
Background
The Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company, Inc was founded and operated by Fred and August, brother's who began their company in 1913. From the start, the company has been a US-based luxury automobile company with a standard to build the very best hand-built vehicles during the time period. Duesenberg vehicles lived up to this standard until 1937 when the company closed.
Created to build sports cars, the Company began its life in Des Moines, Iowa by two men who were self-taught engineers that produced various experimental vehicles. Unfortunately, the brothers did have much selling capability, and due to this the company claimed bankruptcy and closed in 1922.
Purchasing the Duesenberg Company in 1926, Errett Lobban Cord, the owner of Cord Automobile, Auburn Automobile, and several other transportation companies acquired the Duesenberg Brothers' engineering skills along with a brand name. Setting out to produce the Model J, Cord hired Fred Duesenberg to design both the engine and the chassis that would eventually be the best in the world.
Displayed at the New York Car Show of 1928, the Model J (Judkins) Duesenberg was indeed impressive. While only the engine and chassis were put on display at the show, the body and interior of the vehicle would be eventually custom-made by an extremely experienced coachbuilder to the owner's specification. Coachbuilders in both Europe and North America were responsible for the extensive bodywork. The finished product was the grandest, largest, and most beautiful vehicle ever before created. The base model cost around $13,500, while the top of the line model sold for an extreme $25,000.
With a lack of supercharged form, the Model J was renowned for its incredibly 265 horsepower, straight-8 engine, and dual overhead camshafts. Able to reach an impressive top speed of 119 mph, and 94 mph in 2nd gear, the Model J was a success.
While other top-of-the-line vehicles of the time period could barely reach 100 mph, the Duesenberg models were definitely turning some heads. The 1932 SJ was estimated to reach 104 mph in 2nd gear, a top speed of 135-140 mph in 2nd, and turned around 0-60 in 8 seconds. The supercharged Model J came with 320 HP and the supercharger was placed alongside the engine, with creased exhaust pipes to make room for it. The SJ models were easily recognizable due to their shiny creased tubes, a trademark by E. L. Cord. Weighing around two and a half tons, due to the large array of custom coachwork available, the Duesenbergs were not any heavier than their fellow competitors.
Rapidly becoming of the most popular vehicles in the world, the Duesenberg was a status symbol for the elite. Such famous owners of the Duesenberg were Clark Gable, the Duke of Windsor, and Gary Cooper.
Advertised to be the 'best car in the world', Duesenberg's have held up to its status for numerous years. Following world-beating performance along with high regard and standard for quality, the Duesenberg continued to hold the reputation for opulence.
A total of 481 Model Js and SJs were produced between 1928 and 1937. Following E. L. Cord's financial empire collapsing, Duesenberg ceased production in 1937. It is estimated that approximately 50% of these classic cars are still on the road today. Both Duesenberg Model J's and SJ's are among the most desired collectible classic cars in the world."

Gordon Buehrig, Duesenberg's luminary designer, created the Torpedo Phaeton. Five were built, and this is one of only two by Walker. The beautiful rounded rear deck features a hinged compartment that hides the "disappearing top" entirely, while the double windshields and curved roll-up windows protect passengers from wind at high speeds. This Torpedo Phaeton (J-548) debuted in the 1935 Hollywood comedy $1,000 a Minute and was then acquired by a textile heiress and eventually driven from Hollywood to St. Louis by a doctor from Dallas [Um, not really. The car was sold to Dr. W.B. Dallas, a St. Louis insurance executive. See Sotheby's description below]. It joined the Lee Collection in 1995.

THE TORPEDO PHAETON: FROM FAN MAIL TO MASTERPIECE
Gordon Buehrig’s design for the Duesenberg Torpedo Phaeton is justifiably famed. With its firmly rounded lines, disappearing fabric top, folding dual rear windshields, and rear compartment instruments, it is taut, sleek, and unabashedly, fiercely sporting, in a way that few Duesenbergs, for all their beauty and glory, actually are. It looks like a gentleman’s sports car—specifically, a young gentleman’s sports car. That is no coincidence, as that is exactly what the design was created to be.
One morning, Duesenberg president Harold Ames received an eight-page letter from Marcus Jay Lawrence of Washington, D.C., declaring that he wanted, as Ames told Buehrig, “a Duesenberg built to his own ideas. He has a Model A Ford with racing equipment on the engine that he wishes to trade on the Duesenberg.” Neither Ames nor Buehrig took the letter totally seriously, but it inspired Buehrig to sketch out, as he put it, “something we would want to build for an auto show,” meeting Lawrence’s request for a body with a convertible sedan’s features, such as roll-up windows and a neatly folding top, but the lines of a phaeton. Buehrig drew the car up and Ames obligingly sent it with a polite letter to Lawrence, who responded with a request as to what the car would cost; Ames quoted $19,000. Lawrence wired back, “Proceed immediately.”
The young “fan” was, it turned out, the twenty-something heir of a wealthy Washington, D.C.-based publisher of farm journals, who reportedly had a $5,000-a-month payout from his trust fund during the 1930s. He lived as fast as his automobile drove, yet obviously had a gentlemanly side. Buehrig recounted that when young Lawrence visited Duesenberg to take delivery—indeed in his hot rod Model A, but chauffeured—he walked among the factory handing every workman a five dollar bill!
The Torpedo Phaeton was the only Duesenberg body that Buehrig ever created as an individual, from-the-ground-up design for a specific customer. That did stop the beauty of its lines from being duplicated, however. After the original, built for Lawrence to Buehrig’s design by Brunn of New York, four additional cars were produced. The first two were built by the American iteration of Weymann in Indianapolis; when that firm folded, the second pair were completed by the A.H. Walker Body Company—which more or less continued Weymann’s work, out of the same factory—and adapted Duesenberg’s trade name of “LaGrande.” All were among the most beautiful dual-cowl phaetons, and among the most beautiful Duesenbergs—and all thanks to a young man whose spirit for life carried through to an automobile design that outlived him.
J-548: THE SILVER SCREEN, SHOWS, AND ST. LOUIS
The car with chassis number 2583 and engine number J-548, offered here, is one of the two original Walker-LaGrande Torpedo Phaetons, both of which were fitted with the later skirted Model J fenders as well as 17-inch wheels to suit. In addition to having been the only Torpedo Phaeton originally delivered without side exhaust, it can be told apart from its sibling by the location of the exterior courtesy lights, which were mounted underneath the rear doors rather than at the center of the car.
Duesenberg historian Ray Wolff recorded that J-548 was built for Hallie Plaisted of Beverly Hills, California, and delivered in November 1935. It made a cameo appearance in several scenes of the 1935 Republic comedy film, 1,000 Dollars a Minute, which immortalizes on-screen the car in its original delivery trim, complete with wheel covers and the late-production “JN” skirted fenders. In this same form it went on to appear on the Duesenberg stand at the 1936 Los Angeles Auto Show, as proven in a photograph published in the Winter 1975 issue of The Classic Car. Soon after the car was traded back and sold to Dr. W.B. Dallas, a St. Louis insurance executive and breeder of pigs and cattle, and moved east to that city. It is believed that the current supercharger-style side exhaust was installed by the car’s delivery to Dr. Dallas.
In 1947 J-548 passed from Dr. Dallas to the collecting partnership of William Banks and Frank D. McPhee of Centralia, Illinois, then the following year to early enthusiasts Clifford Greve and Norris Allen, returning it to St. Louis. Greve and Allen were part of a small and close-knit cadre of pioneering Full Classic connoisseurs in that city, and were both Duesenberg fanatics. Greve eventually bought out Allen’s share in the car.
One of the young collectors mentored by Greve and Allen was an architect named Fred Guyton, who had much admired both men’s automobiles. Guyton began acquiring fine pre-war automobiles himself in the early 1970s, and in 1972 became the next fortunate owner of J-548, retrieving it from the Greve carriage house (and, not long after, moving into the Greve residence—bringing the car back home!). The Duesenberg remained as-acquired, in largely original and unrestored condition, and oft-driven.
Very few cars that entered The Guyton Collection ever left it during his lifetime. Alas, circumstances forced J-548 to become an exception, and in 1984 it was acquired by yet another prominent figure of the St. Louis vintage automobile scene, Fred Weber. Mr. Weber had the car restored by Fran Roxas in its present livery, after which it was exhibited at events all over the country, winning its class at Pebble Beach and Meadowbrook as well as its Primary First at the ACD Club National Reunion in 1986, and achieving two perfect 100-point scores in CCCA Grand Classics in 1987.
From the Weber stable the Duesenberg passed in 1989 to the renowned collector John Mozart of California, in whose ownership it appeared in the famous 1990 book, The Classic Car by Beverly Rae Kimes. It was not long after sold by Mozart to General William Lyon, himself owner of numerous extraordinary Duesenbergs, and later into the collection of its present owners. The restoration has been well-preserved within their collection, with the recent addition of correct wheel covers, as fitted when it was new; in fact, in 2024 it achieved Third in Class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
THE SURVIVORS
Of the five Torpedo Phaetons produced, Marcus Lawrence’s Brunn original was, alas, damaged beyond repair in an early accident, and its parts scavenged. The remaining four have survived to be prized—and that is no understatement; an original Torpedo Phaeton has not been sold, publicly or otherwise, in two decades.
J-548 is not only the first to be released in recent memory, but is an inarguably outstanding Duesenberg by any measure, having been loved since it was just a seven-year-old used automobile in 1942; since World War II it has been in the hands of men and women who appreciated it, and thus it has remained, while restored, absolutely intact, with the chassis, firewall, engine, and body with which it departed Indianapolis in 1935. Few Duesenbergs can so claim to have been so loved; even fewer are one of Gordon Buehrig’s unrivaled masterpieces of design, and fewer still, to put a fine edge on it, are available for sale.
The Torpedo Phaeton still shines. It still roars with potency. It is, in a word, youthful.
And that is exactly what it was created to be.

Meine erste Foto-Einzelausstellung präsentiert im Café Berio, Berlin

In meiner ersten Foto-Einzelausstellung zeigte ich meine Berliner Portraits und einige meiner Vogel-Fotografien; daher der Titel der Ausstellung. In meinem Fotoprojekt wollte ich einmal weg von den sonst bewusst gewählten Orten, an denen man ein Fotoshooting durchführt. Ein Studio oder eine ausgewählte Location haben für die Menschen meist etwas sehr Unpersönliches. Ich wollte dorthin, wo es am authentischsten ist; an die Orte, an denen die Protagonisten (überwiegend Künstler) zu Hause und in ihrem Element sind: auf der Bühne, hinter der Bühne und vor, während und nach einem Auftritt bzw. Event. Ich möchte dem Betrachter Bilder zeigen, die er nicht unbedingt während einer Veranstaltung wahrnimmt und Außenstehende gefangen nehmen, als hätten sie es live miterlebt.
Über 70 Arbeiten präsentierte ich in der Ausstellung; darunter Portraits von Romy Haag, Henry de Winter, Hanna Schygulla, Georgette Dee, Dieter Rita Scholl, Gloria Viagra, Ades Zabel, Frank Wilde, Gaby Tupper und vielen anderen.
Vögel leben auf allen Kontinenten. Sie sind flüchtige, scheue Tiere. Auf meinen Fotografien lassen sie aber eine unwahrscheinliche Nähe zu. Das eigentlich Fremde und in der Natur nicht Sichtbare habe ich in meinen Vogel-Portraits festgehalten.
Mein Motto: "Authentizität ist das Schlüsselwort, das hinter meiner Fotografie steht. Ich ziehe es vor, mehr die menschliche Note zu zeigen und weniger die Retusche."
Die meisten der Exponate sind in der queeren Community entstanden.

My first solo photo exhibition presented at Café Berio, Berlin

In my first solo photo exhibition, I showed my Berlin portraits and some of my bird photographs; hence the title of the exhibition. In my photo project, I wanted to get away from the usual deliberately chosen locations for a photo shoot. There is usually something very impersonal about a studio or a selected location for people. I wanted to go where it is most authentic; to the places where the protagonists (mostly artists) are at home and in their element: on stage, backstage and before, during and after a performance or event. I want to show the viewer images that they don't necessarily see during an event and capture outsiders as if they had witnessed it live.
I presented over 70 works in the exhibition, including portraits of Romy Haag, Henry de Winter, Hanna Schygulla, Georgette Dee, Dieter Rita Scholl, Gloria Viagra, Ades Zabel, Frank Wilde, Gaby Tupper and many others.
Birds live on every continent. They are elusive, shy animals. In my photographs, however, they allow an improbable closeness. I have captured what is actually alien and invisible in nature in my bird portraits.
My motto: "Authenticity is the keyword that lies behind my photography. I prefer to show more the human touch and less the retouch."
Most of the exhibits were created in the queer community.
