dream day stewart bc IMG_4481

Morning in Suburbia out on the edges of the GTA-don't slow down or the other guy wins.

Experimenting with slow shutter speeds with the D80. I had to stand around for about 5 minutes before I got the chance to snap a solo car as this part of Jane Street is pretty full of commuters at this time of day.

Another rainy afternoon here in Fairbanks. The weather service just reported that Aug1 2019-Aug 1-2020 was the rainyest 12 month period on record. We had over 28" of moisture compared to our usual of 10".

We may have to rename this pond. It is an abandoned channel of the Tanana River that is called the "seasonal pond" as it used to be dry by June 15. However, since 2013 it hasn't dried up.

Last evening's walk.

I'm really enjoying having the ability to flip open the backyard obs every single clear and calm night here in Honolulu. I've always done DSO imaging, but this planetary stuff is pretty darn fun over a couple beers! I think most of the fun comes from good seeing.

This is some of the old equipment from when the field was a dairy farm. This tractor did the bulk of the clearing of the forest to allow for the open fields for growing grain for the dairy cattle.

Toronto is ringed by these big electricity superhighways. This is just north of the city in the transition zone between city proper and what used to be rural but is now an immense and growing by the minute sprawl of suburbia.

This was shot through the windows of a Viva Transit bus as we passed underneath. For some reason it looks a bit like a diptych with the sky on the right appearing much darker however it is a single image.

This is a capture of a faint appearance of a STEVE arc during the Kp5 aurora display of July31/Aug 1, 2024. This was at 12:10 a.m. MDT, so on Aug 1. A faint arc or ray was visible to the eye, but the camera recorded the pinkish rays at right which are likely STEVE arcs below a more diffuse and fainter red arc which is likely a SAR, a Stable Auroral Red arc. The main green auroral arc with blue sunlit tops is across the left in the north and northeast. At far right are faint bands of green airglow, which were bright enough this night to see with the unaided eye as faint bands across the south, unusual.

So this was a very colourful sky, at least to the camera.

STEVE = Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. STEVE is not a nomal aurora but is a horizontally flowing region of hot gas, usually white or pink. It has been known to evolve out of a SAR arc, which may be what is happening here.

This is a panorama of 5 segments, each 20-second exposures with the RF15-35mm lens at 15mm and f/2.8 and on the red-sensitive Canon Ra at ISO 2000. Stitched with PTGui. Taken from home in southern Alberta.

In a far country, and a distant age,

Ere sprites and fays had bade farewell to earth,

A boy was born of humble parentage;

The stars that shone upon his lonely birth

Did seem to promise sovereignty and fame—

Yet no tradition hath preserved his name.

~

For oft, when he believed himself alone,

They caught brief snatches of mysterious rhymes,

Which he would murmur in an undertone,

Like a pleased bee’s in summer; and at times

A strange far look would come into his eyes,

As if he saw a vision in the skies.

DDM 150 Book Project

Bicolored cosmos. This one surprised me this year. I don't recall planting it, but all the coreopsis reseeded and we had a good season of colorful flowers.

They are back , must be summer soon. The first water lily that I've seen this year and it is only Aug 1st. Have a great long week-end everyone-stay safe.

Rover pipe line going in. A coincidence that it's name is Rover and here is Dooley?

Controversial and taking up a lot of farmland. This particular path is normally planted with corn. The dirt road which it crosses here had several 75-100 year old oak trees that were cut down to make way for the wide path required to dig and place the pipes.
