The Garifuna are African descendants who escaped from a spanish slave ship which was shipwrecked off the coast of St. Vincent in the 1600's. The Garifuna community in the U.S dates back to the 1800's and number an estimated 40,000 strong in New York alone.

Senior Chief Musician Adam Grimm from Forest Hill, Md., who serves as the U.S. Navy Band's public affairs officer, performs baritone saxophone with the U.S. Navy Band Commodores jazz ensemble at Hammond High School following an educational outreach visit designed to inspire future generations of musicians and leaders through the professionalism of the U.S. Navy Band.
