What first attracted me to take this photo was the amazing symmetry between these grain bins. The two tall bins are very alike. The medium size are incredibly similar. The outer ones not so much except for size. I originally wanted to shoot this with the setting sun behind the grain bins. But when I saw the sun poking through I shot it as you see. Sadly a few weeks after I shot this photo we had a big wind storm come through that destroyed the grain bin on the right.

Taipei Botanical Garden (台北植物園), Taipei, Taiwan

During a short visit to Taiwan, I was pleasantly surprised to see this lone male at Taipei Botanical Garden. This species is rarely seen at sea level. Its natural habitat is at higher altitudes. As can be imagined, its sighting attracted hundreds of birders to the Garden. It also invoked territorial aggression from another lone male of a different species, White-rumped Shama, also rarely seen and shown in the previous picture. With both birds liking the same tree, the Vivid Niltava was often chased away by the White-rumped Shama and only returned to feed when the latter was elsewhere.

Glossy Ibis- Plegadis Falcinellus

Flocks of Glossy Ibis forage quite close together, advancing slowly as they probe a muddy area. This activity often attracts Snowy Egrets and other species of waders, which capture minnows and other prey moving away from the feeding ibis flocks.

Glossy Ibises nest in colonies, often among other species of ibis, heron, egret, or spoonbill. Colonial nesters have the advantage of many extra sets of eyes looking out for predators. Colonies might also be places where highly gregarious species like ibises can share information about the most productive foraging areas.

Glossy Ibis is a cosmopolitan species, also found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In recent decades, its population in Spain has been increasing rapidly, probably helped by increased rice cultivation there. Glossy Ibises banded in Spain have turned up as far away as Barbados, having crossed the Atlantic—a remarkable feat but one that several species of heron and egret have managed as well.

The oldest recorded Glossy Ibis was at least 21 years old and lived in Virginia between 1971 and 1992.

The color attracted me to this large Water Lily, along with the sparkle in the water.

Hope you all have a marvelous week and thank you for your visit and support, it is appreciated so much!

A few weeks ago I planted a "butterfly bush" in my back yard, hoping to attract a few visitors. This Tiger Swallowtail was my first guest, and he was so busy that he didn't seem to mind that I was up in his face, clicking away!

It is Fact

Opposites attract

May it be the Size or Colour

All the same would be much duller

Focus In or Focus Out

We know what that’s all about

Light or Darkness

The Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), also known as the Steller's sea lion and northern sea lion, is a near-threatened species of sea lion in the northern Pacific. It is the sole member of the genus Eumetopias and the largest of the eared seals (Otariidae). Among pinnipeds, it is inferior in size only to the walrus and the two species of elephant seals. The species is named for the naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, who first described them in 1741. The Steller sea lion has attracted considerable attention in recent decades, owing to significant and largely unexplained declines in their numbers over an extensive portion of their northern range in Alaska. (Wikipedia)

We saw several groups of these sea lions during our trip, but these two little islands were the most densely packed. The animals at the junction of the rocks would periodically be washed over by crashing waves.

Forbidden City by Indo Chine

Consistently rated among the preeminent establishments at Singapore’s mega-popular Clarke Quay nightlife precinct, The Forbidden City has for years been attracting crowds of discerning diners and party goers with its multi-faceted offerings. Occupying the majestic Singapore waterfront building- The River House- which has been listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO- the building was originally a 19th Century river front godown, later converted into the palatial residence of a wealthy trader. Operated by Singapore’s renowned IndoChine Group, the building has, while maintaining its historic structure and facade, been extensively re-modelled internally into a collection of stylish restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

View of the Western Cape Cedarberg travelling north to south. Taken from a moving vehicle but the light on the mountains was what attracted me to this shot.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) fledglings outside an artificial nest box in the mixed woods of the boreal forest zone north of Thorhild, Alberta, Canada.

A friend of mine puts out a number of nest boxes for owls on his farm property, maintains them and when they are close to fledging he contacts me so I can view them in their natural habitat.

He does this to provide additional nesting habitat in areas where they may otherwise not have that option. Good conservation in action by a concerned individual.

Video from April this year. Beautiful flowers welcomed us in the central park of this beautiful city. There were mostly tulips, which attracted me to immortalize them

Another picture of the Kingfisher from yesterday. I threw some fish food in to try to attract some fish for her. The minnows swim around my dock a lot because I feed them all through the day by throwing in pond food and they like the shade under the dock in the heat. Looks like she approves.

Each year the ice free water in this area attracts a number of wintering swans. To get close enough for some shots I tromped along the edge of the river through about a foot of snow. The weather was great (cold and sunny) making for an enjoyable outing.

As the temperature outside has climbed closer to three digits, I started thinking about how I wish for ice or snow on days like these. The more I thought about it, I found I agree with Niels Bohr's statement.

Some of the pleasure in sharing quotations here is my love of learning about the people who spoke those words. You might want to check this link out if you are so inclined.

I’ve always been rather attracted to this Papermate propelling pencil because of its transparent barrel and the details of the spiral mechanism for extruding the graphite. Oh, and the colour… So I could hardly resist when the spiral topic came around again for Macro Mondays.

A bit of a rush job though - one take and then a patch-up in the processing. Had I had more time I think I would have used a tripod and focus stacking (or a different lens). Ah well…

This is vaguely what I intended, or at least an inch and half of it anyway. The full pencil is more interesting :)

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Macro Mondays :)

Those wonderful purple-mauve flowerheads of Artichoke attract lots of insects. Bees of many kinds, but also flies among which really tiny ones. I think this is a Drosophilid clutching a flower petal but I'm afraid I can't be more specific. Anyone out there in Flickrland? Thanks...

The coastal region of The San Francisco Peninsula is home to many beautiful and historic cities and towns. Half Moon Bay is a quaint, small town by the Pacific Ocean, known as the pumpkin capital of the world. The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival and the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off attract over 100,000 visitors.

It's just a bit early in the year for them. Pantaloon Bees thrive especially in May and later. So I was lucky to see this one already foraging in a field with lots of Bright Dandelions. They're solitary insects and tend to their own burrows but they often congregate in suitable, mostly sandy areas.

Spoon and Fork met on the dancefloor. The chemistry was instantaneous.

It's a pretty herb and one that has medicinal purposes. Its essential oil is also used in perfumes and as a flavouring for vermouths, wines and liqueurs. Clary sage also attracts pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies so I'd say this is is an all-around winner.

Thank you for your visits and comments, they're very much appreciated. Have a great weekend!
