I've been waiting for these guys, and finally found one willing to pose for me. Okay, "willing, by assassin bug standards," which means I have several shots of his little red butt as he stalked away, bored with my poking and prodding him into position. I think wheel bug nymphs are just the cutest little things.

Look at my cute little round eyes...

Not a great photo because he wasn't exactly a willing model, but I love assassin bugs and didn't have an adult Zelus before, only a nymph. The most likely species is Zelus luridus.

Nymph now much larger than when it emerged from the eggsac it is a threat to anything it encounters on the blade of grass. But, still wingless, it is not the ominous hunter it will be as an adult assassin bug. Location is accurate within a few meters (GPS fix).

I don't think they bite at this stage.

The ant-snatching assassin bug nymph Acanthaspis Petax, covers itself with the corpses of its own prey.

They grab passing insects, stab them with their syringe-like mouthparts, inject paralytic saliva and digestive enzymes.

After sucking up the broken-down bodily fluids, the ant-snatcher secretes fine sticky threads from its back and sticks the remains of the ant, an empty shell, onto its back.

Study suggested that the assassin bug’s cadaverous backpack of corpses deceives and protectes it from other predators.

Assassin bug enjoying a meal. And you thought you were having a bad day!

Here is a Assassin Bug (Reduviidae) on an old seed whorl of native Black Sage (Salvia mellifera, Lamiaceae) in the woods today. I believe it is species Pselliopus spinicollis in the subfamily Harpactorinae. This little predator is quite small, less than 1/2 inch long. (San Marcos Pass, 11 October 2025)

A red and black kissing bug from Missouri.

Found at Resaca De La Palma State Park in far southern Texas. Cameron County, Texas, USA.

Presumably Stenolemus sp. Obviously deceased judging by the condition of the abdomen. I wonder if this predator of spiders became the prey of a spider.

Found on the exterior wall of restroom, right about here - N 25.99202 W 97.56355

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.

I put this one in for perspective. Notice the thorn puncture and the guitar callus.

I took quite a few shots of this guy. He looked a little puny like he hadn't eaten in a while. Even though I plucked the plant he was on and moved him around to better light, the assassin never let go of his prey. Looks like he was pretty hungry.

Reduviidae - possibly Ploiaria sp, I have been watching a web for months, looking for the spider.Today I thought I could see some really unusual very fine legged spider on the web, like a fine grey mantis type spider less than 10 mm long and so fine, almost invisible. It got into many positions some very much like oxyopes spider so I took many photos and then took a close up of its face looking for eye shots and saw unusual eyes It was then that I saw its proboscus, it was an asassin bug of some sort, and even had wings, most likely feeds on spiders. Thought you might be interested in an invisible camoflaged mimic spider predator.
