Is this a type of Assassin bug?

Stenolemus bituberus - or a Stenolemus sp.

This bug hunts in two general ways: by slowly stalking the victim and by luring it. In the first way the insect slowly approaches the spider until it comes in range and then suddenly stabs the prey with its rostrum. While using the second and more interesting tactic, the assassin bug mimics spiders victim by pulling a thread of his web. The spider is attracted thinking it is his prey and comes to check the situation, when he is suddenly stabbed by the S. bituberus rostrum. The assassin bug sometimes carries some parts of the spider bodies as an armor. S. bituberus inhabitates Australia.

Yesterday, this large assassin bug was on the outside wall of the building. I quickly notified one of our pre-school teachers, the one who offers a special concentration in science.

 

She was delighted! She captured the insect in a plastic bag and placed it in the freezer for future educational opportunities.

 

The assassin bug is known as such because it attacks other insects, such as cicadas. It's also known as a "wheel bug" because of the cog-like structure on its back.

This bug is so much hairy that it carries a lot of debris with itself. This Stenolemus bug (Reduviidae, Emesinae) is spider-eater (Araneophage).

In this image it is seen that this bug is cleaning its antenna with its forelegs.

Assassin Bug (family Reduviidae) (subfamily Harpactorinae), Mae Hia, Chiang Mai, Thailand

I noticed this tiny Assassin Bug (family Reduviidae ) in the insect order Hemiptera on a leaf of native Wild Blackberry (Rubus ursinus) in the Rosaceae plant family this morning. You can see its proboscis folded under its head. (San Marcos Pass, 10 June 2012)

 

This little critter looks a lot like an ant, especially when it moves - but less so motionless in a photo. We have better ant-mimic Hemiptera in the mountains, and I hope to get a photo soon.

 

Two Assassin Bugs. One is squooshed from my flip-flop. The other I caught alive, but it died in captivity.

I found this little critter on my sock as I sat writing at a small park near home. To give an idea of scale, from the beginning of one sock row to the next measures about 3 millimeters.

 

Thanks to Lynette Schimming over at Bugguide for identifying this as the Genus Zelus (assassin bug), Family Reduviidae. Exact species unknown. This one's a nymph (juvenile).

According to the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, "Most members of the family Reduviidae are predators. The nymphs and adults capture insects and other arthropods in their raptoral (prey-grabbing) front legs, then use their sharp beaks to suck fluids from their victim. They also inject a small amount of poison that paralyzes their prey, making it easier to handle." Unlike ambush bugs, which wait for prey, assassin bugs actively hunt. Assassin bugs are generally considered to be beneficial insects.

 

"In warm months, females lay eggs which are stuck in clusters to leaves and stems," U KY continues. "After hatching, the wingless nymphs grow and molt 4 times (some species molt 7 times) before becoming full-sized, winged adults. Adults are usually the overwintering stage."

Length of nymph: ~0.5 inch (12 mm)

 

The nymph of the Wheel Bug varies in colors of red, from this dark red to an orange-red. Note the color of the tips of the antennae : orange/red.

Apologies for being so prolific, but there is so much to see at the moment!

 

Simon presented me with a "big black beetle" which I just accepted. It wouldn't stay still, so I had to put it into a container (wine glass, as you do) to get a photo. I was really shocked to see that this huge (2.5cm), heavy set critter was a bug. Look at the pads on its forelegs. I assume they are for clasping victims.

The family that stabs together....?

Found this immature Assassin Bug on the table outside this afternoon in my Succulents.

 

It was only about a half inch long, talk about Alien looking.

I thought I'd lucked out and found a cooperative bee, until I looked closely...

I was looking through the archives for photos of real Thread-legged Bugs (subfamily Emesinae) of the Assassin Bug (Reduviidae) family in the order Hemiptera (see my [Previous] photo), and I found a few.

 

I got this photo on the dry flats along the Santa Ynez River a few years ago. The insect is prowling along a branch of composite Scale Broom (Lepidospartum squamatum). Maybe it is genus Emesaya? (Paradise, Santa Ynez River, 26 August 2009)

 

If you look close, you can see that it has no "clubs" on its antennae and it holds its front legs like the predator it is.

 

This is another Assassin Bug (family Reduviidae) in the order Hemiptera perched on a leaf of Wild Blackberry (Rubus ursinus) in the Rosaceae plant family - with raindrops. If you compare my [Newer] photo taken yesterday, you can see the same brown scar on the leaf. This little bug hasn't moved at all! (San Marcos Pass, 11 October 2012)

 

I got this photo during a moment of sunshine in the rain yesterday. Today, I found four more of the assassin bugs on different leaves of the wild blackberry. They must like the rain! Speaking of rain, we're up to 0.22 inches in our rain gauge. Not much, but it's a start on the new rain year.

 

The Natural History Society sponsored a very interesting talk tonight by Dr. Jon Keely talking about Fire in Mediterranean Ecosystems. I got home late, so two photos will do.

It looks like a spinier version of a Four-Spurred Assassin Bug.

The common name derives from the coglike projection on the back of the mature insect. The "wheel" on the adult insect's back is unmistakable. Immature nymphs are mostly red. Adults are gray to brown. It preys upon other insects - caterpillars, aphids, bees, sawflies etc. - and is thus considered beneficial. [Source BugGuide.net]

 

The Locust Borer Beetle and the Spined Assassin Bug had a short disagreement as to who's turf this flower was. The ant was an innocent bystander caught up in the fray.

Small Bug on a blade of grass - Some call it an Assassin Bug. He (or she) joined us while Caming near Show Low Arizona

Insect Order Hemiptera. This is a predatory insect. It eats other insects and small spiders. Family Reduviidae.

Here is a freshly molted ambush bug. Left behind is the shell (discarded exoskeleton) of the ambush bug. It looks like this ambush bug has progressed from the nymph stage into adulthood.

This is an adult Assassin Bug in the Reduviidae family of the order Heteroptera, Hemiptera on a leaf of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia, Fagaceae) today. It might be a Leafhopper Assassin Bug (Zelus renardii). Not the best photo, as it was breezy this morning and I stubbornly stayed with ISO 280. (San Marcos Pass, 2 April 2015)
