Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (WY-296) in northern Wyoming crosses the Shoshone National Forest through the Absaroka Mountains to the Clarks Fork Valley. It is named after the Native American chief of the Nez Perce Tribe. Chief Joseph and his people fled Yellowstone to avoid being forced onto reservations. The tribe eventually surrendered in northeastern Montana. Not only is the Chief Joseph Highway a stunning drive, it is historically significant and a reminder of the Native American struggle.
The Chief Joseph Scenic Highway is one component of the Nez Perce National Historic Trail. The Trail stretches from Wallowa Lake, Oregon, to the Bear Paw Battlefield near Chinook, Montana. The 1877 flight of the Nez Perce from their homelands while pursued by U.S. Army Generals Howard, Sturgis, and Miles is one of the most fascinating and sorrowful events in Western U.S. history. Chief Joseph, Chief Looking Glass, Chief White Bird, Chief Ollokot, Chief Lean Elk, and others led nearly 750 Nez Perce men, women, and children, and twice that many horses, over 1,170 miles through the mountains on a trip that lasted from June to October of 1877. Their desperate and circuitous route as they tried to escape the pursuing white forces is what we now call the Nez Perce National Historic Trail. (from U.S. Forest Service)
In 1878, shortly after the Nez Perce surrender, a small war party of Bannocks was attacked by Gen. Miles' troops just south of Clark, near the northeast corner of the current Shoshone National Forest. The Indians retreated over what is now known as Dead Indian Hill, leaving one of their wounded behind. The following day, the Bannock was found by some of the Crow Indian Army scouts who promptly killed and scalped him. Until recent years, a rude pile of stones halfway down the west side of the hill marked the grave. (from Shoshone National Forest)

I wonder if I'm the only one that does this.. When I get into a new hobby, or ANYTHING for that matter, I get COMPLETELY CONSUMED in it.. I mean I'm looking for magazines, books, tutorials, videos, people who are into the same thing that know more than me about the subject, ANYTHING!!!
But then during my journey, I find that I'm so into looking for knowledge on a subject that I rarely get to enjoy that thing itself..
For example, my photography..
For so many years, I was consumed with seeking how to do things the right way, that I rarely picked up my camera to shoot.. I don't know if it was the thrill of finding new knowledge that obstructed me or just fear of failing..
Sometimes knowledge can be restrictive to your creativity.. You're so into the "rules" and "theory" that you forget to actually enjoy yourself.
This project has already proven to be the best education I could ever hope for in my photographic journey, career, or whatever you wanna call it.. Sure I've gotten the opportunity to grow, showcase my talent, learn new things, make mistakes, etc.. But I've found the JOY again of what made me pick up a camera in the first place...
So I tell everyone, in the immortal words of Goodie Mob, "Get up, get out, and get something..." You can't explore the world just reading about it.. Whatever it is that you're into, just go do it... Stop reading about how to do it better, just go do it..

At the Luna Park giggle palace in St. Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria. This was taken during an Australian Costumers Guld picnic by the seaside late last century.... or was it the century BEFORE that? :) Historical period bathing costumes were the order of the day, naturally this was my take on the concept.
That's me in my deep sea diver costume, the full story of which you'll find elsewhere in this photoset.
Recently I found myself revisting these pictures for an article for a magazine and I found this colour version of the black and white picture stashed away. I liked the painted horses so much I decided to post it as well.

"Jan Neruda Grammar School (Czech: Gymnázium Jana Nerudy) is a Czech state secondary school situated in Prague. It is named after the writer, Jan Neruda.
The school ranks as the second best secondary (high) school, and the best public (state, i.e. attended for free) secondary school in the Czech Republic according to the Czech Ministry of Education, based on the performance of students/graduates at the Maturita (A-level equivalent).
The grammar school is located on Hellichova Street in Prague. Jan Neruda Grammar School offers two courses of study: bilingual (French-Czech) and general (there used to be two general courses, science and humanities, although the difference between the two courses was marginal compared to the Anglo-Saxon education system; recently, these two courses have been merged). In the first and second years bilingual-course students are taught in Czech, but from the third year most subjects (apart from languages, fine arts and sports) are taught in French. It takes 6 years to complete the Grammar school. The staff of the Grammar school consists of about 65 teachers. Between 1996 and 2012 the school offered also a separate course consisting of general subjects and extensive music lessons for musically talented students in a different building located on Komenského Square (nowadays an unrelated institution with its own headmaster). The Grammar school is a member of the ASPnet UNESCO network. The school building is barrier-free.
Malá Strana (Czech for "Little Side (of the River)", German: Prager Kleinseite) or more formally Menší Město pražské (English: Lesser Town of Prague) is a district of the city of Prague, Czech Republic, and one of its most historic neighbourhoods.
In the Middle Ages, it was a dominant center of the ethnic German (and since 16th century also Italian) citizens of Prague. It also housed many noble palaces while the right-bank towns were comparatively more bourgeois and more Bohemian Czech.
Prague (/ˈprɑːɡ/ PRAHG; Czech: Praha [ˈpraɦa]; German: Prag [pʁaːk]; Latin: Praga) is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of Bohemia. On the Vltava river, Prague is home to about 1.3 million people. The city has a temperate oceanic climate, with relatively warm summers and chilly winters.
Prague is a political, cultural, and economic hub of central Europe, with a rich history and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectures. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and residence of several Holy Roman Emperors, most notably Charles IV (r. 1346–1378) and Rudolf II (r. 1575–1611).
It was an important city to the Habsburg monarchy and Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city played major roles in the Bohemian and the Protestant Reformations, the Thirty Years' War and in 20th-century history as the capital of Czechoslovakia between the World Wars and the post-war Communist era.
Prague is home to a number of well-known cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of 20th-century Europe. Main attractions include Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square with the Prague astronomical clock, the Jewish Quarter, Petřín hill and Vyšehrad. Since 1992, the historic center of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The city has more than ten major museums, along with numerous theatres, galleries, cinemas, and other historical exhibits. An extensive modern public transportation system connects the city. It is home to a wide range of public and private schools, including Charles University in Prague, the oldest university in Central Europe.
Prague is classified as a "Alpha-" global city according to GaWC studies. In 2019, the city was ranked as 69th most livable city in the world by Mercer. In the same year, the PICSA Index ranked the city as 13th most livable city in the world. Its rich history makes it a popular tourist destination and as of 2017, the city receives more than 8.5 million international visitors annually. In 2017, Prague was listed as the fifth most visited European city after London, Paris, Rome, and Istanbul.
Bohemia (Latin Bohemia, German Böhmen, Polish Czechy) is a region in the west of the Czech Republic. Previously, as a kingdom, they were the center of the Czech Crown. The root of the word Czech probably corresponds to the meaning of man. The Latin equivalent of Bohemia, originally Boiohaemum (literally "land of Battles"), which over time also influenced the names in other languages, is derived from the Celtic tribe of the Boios, who lived in this area from the 4th to the 1st century BC Bohemia on it borders Germany in the west, Austria in the south, Moravia in the east and Poland in the north. Geographically, they are bounded from the north, west and south by a chain of mountains, the highest of which are the Krkonoše Mountains, in which the highest mountain of Bohemia, Sněžka, is also located. The most important rivers are the Elbe and the Vltava, with the fertile Polabean Plain extending around the Elbe. The capital and largest city of Bohemia is Prague, other important cities include, for example, Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Kladno, Ústí nad Labem, Liberec, Hradec Králové, Pardubice and České Budějovice, Jihlava also lies partly on the historical territory of Bohemia." - info from Wikipedia.

Allow me to gloat. This is my 5th consecutive year as a Microsoft MVP. As a programmer, it's a prestigious award because there are less than 1500 of us worldwide, and you get it as a recognition of contributions in the technical community (forums, articles, conferences). When someone asks me to explain it in plain English, I just say that it means I'm a really smart programmer and this is a real geek status symbol (not today's pansy breed of people who think they're geek... I was geek before 'geek' was cool). Thank you for allowing me to gloat. Now observe the dust on the trophy, it couldn't be wiped off. Dusty office.

This compact heliograph was developed by Supervisor David P. Godwin of the US Forest Service in 1914-1915, and manufactured by A. Leitz of San Francisco. For technical details on its construction and use, see:
Millar, Willis Norman, "Methods of Communication Adapted to Forest Protection", 1920
Chapter XVIII Heliograph (pp. 169-181) Godwin Forest Service Type Heliograph, which includes two illustrations on prior pages:
Figure 103: Godwin Heliograph with both mirrors (p. 167) and
Figure 102: Godwin Heliograph with one mirror (p. 166).
The image above is a preview size - for the full size, go here: Full Resolution Image
For other images of Godwin Heliographs, see:

(5) 1938 Godwin heliograph at Santiago Peak, CA (Facebook)
(6) Godwin heliograph in California National Forest (now Mendocino NF) (Facebook) in 1923
There's a nice account by a forester of his use of this heliograph in Idaho in 1917 here: The Forest Service Heliograph by E. Clayton McCarty. He describes using two types. I would expect the "smaller portable heliograph" described in the 6th paragraph to be a Godwin heliograph. and the larger one with two tall tripods would have been the 1906 model US Signal Service design, an update of the original 1888 design to use a six-bladed shutter and azimuth knobs at both ends of the mirror bar.
Regarding my contention that this instrument appeared ca 1915:
In May 1914, Godwin said: "The standard heliograph instrument is an awkward article to pack and an impossible article to carry on a saddle horse, but investigations are now in progress to develop a much lighter and smaller instrument" ( hdl.handle.net/2027/mdp.39015068570095?urlappend=%3Bseq=73 )
In Fall 1915, however, it was in wide use: from: "Forest Protection and Modern Invention", de Coert Dubois, Lumber World Review, Vol. 29, p. 61, Nov. 10, 1915
books.google.com/books?id=n-EoAQAAMAAJ&dq=heliograph&...
"D. P. Godewin:[sic - should be "Godwin"] "We have used in California for about three years one regular standard arm heliograph instrument and finally have devised a machine which weighs only one-half of the original machine. We find that the greatest value in the use of it is to patrolmen as they can immedately[sic] get into communication with any lookout points equipped. We are using now about fifty of these."
In the Dec. 1912 Supervisors' meeting in San Francisco , Godwin described his early experiments with the heliograph: first reading about the heliograph in Graves' book on fire protection, then securing two from the District office and personally experimenting, then securing six more and stationing them on lookout points in the California NF in the summer of 1912. The results were positive, and he expressed the hope that he would be able to secure a heliograph for every patrol man for the 1913 season, so that they would always be ready to communicate with the lookouts.

Just thought I'd take the time to learn Ruby and possibly Ruby on Rails. I've been doing ColdFusion for years at work and pretty much hate it at this point. I've also done some work in ASP.NET (C# and VB.NET), PHP, WebDNA, and some Python (Django).
Ruby isn't bad so far. I'm hoping to be able to start on Rails in a few days. The only thing I'm not looking forward to with Rails is Prototype. I'm a much bigger fan of jQuery, however it looks like there may be a plugin for Rails that will replace the automated stuff it does currently with Prototype.

Note:
Control operations in yellow pine in Oregon are confined this spring to the Whitworth Creek and Horsefly division. Most of the work is being done under the direction of Assistant Supervisor Lawrence Frizzell with a twenty to twenty-five man crew in cooperation with the Klamath Forest Protective Association. The method employed is felling, peeling, and buring of the infested trees. On one of the control areas, the Horsefly Division, the western pine beetle (D. brevicomis) has killed over 20 percent of the stand during the three-year period, 1926 to 1928. The Indian Service is doing considerable control work in the southeastern part of the Klamath Indian Reservation with the aid of a special $25,000 appropriation. A. J. I realize online seat request isn't a new thing but I still find it really cool. Those are some seat requests for flights I have (with lufthansa/singapore airlines and air new zealand). I like the air new zealand site much better, it's got a slick modern UI (btw, looking at the source code, both sites use a mixture of jsp and asp.net).
Anyway dear friends, this is the last photo I'm going to upload until February. Tomorrow I'm leaving for a month in New Zealand (with two days in Singapore) and I've no intentions of getting online during that period.
A good happy new year to all of you!
(and if you're in the u.s or Europe - try not to freeze until I get back).

RUBICS website design - Behind The Scenes
[link]
RUBICS Business Solutions website a full 2d/3d website design from scratch. Depends on the same technique of my tutorial (3d Logo Design behind the Scenes) the project fill the gap between 4 different software, Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash and Adobe Dreamweaver.
The success of any digital agency, and indeed your clients, can depend on getting the right brand design. However, you could probably get a friend of a friend to build your site, but would you really be happy with the result? Would you end up changing it again a few months later when you realise it simply isn't up to the task in hand? Most likely yes - is it therefore good value for money...NO!
The role of a High End Creative Design Agency is to be the expert. We do this day in day out and make a living out of it - yet there is still this one remaining hurdle to overcome with a lot of people.
RUBICS Business Solutions is a professional services company established to provide various services any company might require at any stage of its lifecycle and with any budget capacity. RUBICS was inspired from the Rubik’s cube, the game which bears a resemblance to aptitude; prescience, endurance, and long term planning that are considered the most necessary characteristics in any successful business.
Website overview
Basically my mission is to understanding the client and competitors. Whoever international or regional competitors. I start reading a little bit about The Rubik's Cube. Which is a 3-D mechanical puzzle each of the six faces is covered by 9 stickers, among six solid colors (traditionally white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow).[9] A pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colors. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be a solid colour. Similar puzzles have now been produced with various numbers of stickers, not all of them by Rubik. The original 3×3×3 version celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2005.
Website techniques
The designs I create are nearly all based on the 976 px Grid System. So, before I begin I make some sketches to define the elements positions, and how the layout should be. I mention in my drawing that I'll make a 3d logo animated in my web page.
Second step is to converting everything I created in paper to a real 2d design. I start by using Photoshop to clarify all the elements including menu, 3D Logo, content and other stuff.
Depends on the Rubik's Cube idea I modeled the logo in Autodesk Maya. Start to texturing, animating, lighting and end with rendering and make 3 different animations sequence (FLV videos) played randomly when the page is loaded. Also I animate the menu with a nice smooth transition for sure using Adobe Flash.
Finally with Adobe Dreamweaver using CSS Styles which is the easiest and best way of formatting text in a web site. I used 3 different CSS files. The first one by resetting my entire website and the second to style the layout and objects. The possibilities are endless when you use style sheets. Finally I got a full 2d 3d flash tableless XHTML/CSS website.
Website features
