(Khalil Gibran)
Said a fox chased by twenty hunters on horseback with a pack of twenty dogs: “Of course, they will kill me. But what poor fools they must be. Certainly it would not be worthwhile for twenty foxes, riding twenty donkeys, accompanied by twenty wolves, to hunt down a single man to kill him ".
(Khalil Gibran)

The semicircular windows offer a clue to the Via Degli Asini. The road is a raised defensive walkway inside the buildings. Brisighella, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, one of Italy’s Borghi Plù Belli.
Probably built in the sec. XIV, it represents the oldest defensive bulwark to protect the village.
The road was a walkway, then covered and incorporated in the houses when it lost its function of defence. Later it transported gypsum from the quarries above the village, using donkeys.

Built by the end of 300 d.C., at first it was a defensive alley to check the enemies’ movements. Then it become a protected and covered street for trades. Strolling along the way, you can still notice the ancient stables for the donkeys. But nowadays it is a very nice trekking trails to get a great point of view on the whole borgo.

the owner of the donkey (Graziano, or Badoglio I believe) made some exasperated gestures at me. Was it 'get on with it", or just "get lost"?!! I'm still wondering.

Fra asini animali e asini umani sono molto peggiori i secondi
Between animal donkeys and human donkeys the latter are much worse.....

The town is small, but very nice. This is its main square. Through the houses on the right, now on the first floor, runs the famous Via degli Asini.
Dietro i mezzi archi sopra le porte al livello della strada si trova la caratteristica "via del Borgo" coperta e sopraelevata (meglio nota come "Via degli Asini")
Behind the half arches above the gates at street level is the characteristic "via del Borgo", covered and raised (better known as "Via degli Asini", something like "Street of the Donkeys").
