Look! Look! Look!

Discover a brand new installation in our Walled Garden from internationally renowned artists Heather and Ivan Morison. Taking their inspiration from how the Harley's enjoyed their garden in the Georgian era, you can see the garden in a totally new light with this brilliant piece of artwork daily from Saturday 10 June 2017. Go on, take a look!

Berrington Hall

Neo-classical mansion with fine interiors, set in landscape grounds

Standing proud and strong, this fine Georgian mansion sits within 'Capability' Brown’s final garden and landscape. This year, supported by internationally renowned artists Heather and Ivan Morison, we begin the planning and showcasing of our Walled Garden and Pleasure Grounds Restoration Project. In the parkland, you can explore Brown's work with Red Earth’s 'Genius Loci' exhibition. In the house, discover jewel-like interiors, designed by Henry Holland and home to the Harley, Rodney and Cawley families. Experience some of the extremes of the 18th century in the wig and bum shop and discover the hidden ‘below stairs’.

Created as the perfect house in the perfect setting, Berrington Hall has many secrets for visitors to uncover. In this, one of Henry Holland's first houses, you can also explore the family rooms and see how the servants moved around the house unseen by the family and guests.

The interiors include Biaggio Rebecca ceilings, fine period furniture and there are some pieces on display from the Wade Collection. The house is surrounded by Capability Brown's final landscape. Though it has a slightly austere exterior, the house has delicate interiors and a homely, welcoming feel.

Postcard Diaries by Mark Mothersbaugh

For over thirty years, Mothersbaugh has been producing between one and twenty-five postcard-sized artworks daily, ultimately amassing a collection of over 30,000. He began working at the 4 x 6 inch scale in the 1970s, creating small-scale photo-collage lithograph prints.

Mothersbaugh lost regular access to a printmaking studio when Devo began a heavy touring schedule. On the road, he drew on postcard-sized paper. As he became less focused on the band, his postcard output increased dramatically. Sometimes drawn with a brush on antique postcards salvaged from thrift stores, the postcards are part notebook, part sketchbook, and part personal diary. These images have become the source material for many other artworks, including prints, rugs, sculptures, and paintings.

Emergency Room Hanoi

rate this

Date: 28 Oct - 20 Nov 2009

Emergency Room is a format created by the artist Thierry Geoffroy / Colonel that will be activated in Hanoi at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in connection with the royal Danish state visit to Vietnam, November 2009.

Artists are thermometers that can measure and perceive dysfunctions in our society. Artists are experts of all perceptions. What they know or feel must reach the public opinion immediately: Now - before it is too late.

Through Emergency Room, artists can react to reality every day. In Emergency Room the public can have access to the artist's premonitions, suspicions, visions and collected evidences before it is too late. In Emergency Room artists evolve and develop new unexpected methods and forms.

Artists, burning to express themselves about the emergencies of today, join each other daily to display their work in the circular Emergency Room. Punctuality and deadlines are fundamental when yesterday's artworks daily at 12.15 pm is removed from the Emergency Room to give space to the artworks of today. This ritual of changing the exhibition is called: "The Passage". The artworks from yesterday and previous days are then exhibited in the "Delay Museum" beside the Emergency Room.

The Queen, Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark will attend the Passage on November 3rd and engage in the following discussion with the artists.

In Hanoi, a large number of Danish and Vietnamese artists will participate and cooperate over the period of the exhibition.

The Emergency Room Format

Emergency Room is a format: when an art institution has agreed to host the Emergency Room format it is given the license to activate a local version of the format, adapted to the local surroundings and context. Other formats by Thierry Geoffroy include the format "Biennalist", "Critical Run and "Awareness Muscle" .

Emergency Room is also an international movement, like a caravan, and everywhere the format is actualized the community of Emergency Room Artists expands. Emergency Room has been successfully launched in New York, PS1 / MOMA; Berlin, Galerie Olaf Stueber; Denmark, Nikolaj Contemporary art center; Athens, Ileana Tounta Gallery; Italy , Napoli PAN Art Center; Paris, Galerie Taïss.

"Artists, audience and media have been fighting for weeks in order to get to see and participate in the new and innovating exhibition that with its "art of the news" puts the art institution itself to debate.

Reuters, The New Yorker and the TV-channel ABC News are some of the leading media that have brought the story about the original exhibition, and at P.S.1 more than a thousand visitors per day have been seeing it…" (Nikolaj M. Lassen, Weekendavisen, March 30th, 2007)

Emergency Room Hanoi is organized by the Danish Arts Agency and the Royal Danish Embassy in Hanoi.

'Since I Lost You' is is a powerful image, by Rossano B Maniscalchi, which captures a ubiquitous moment with direct simplicity. The viewer is faced with a glass barrier upon which tiny beads of water stand pert to form a dappled screen. From the other side, the face of a beautiful woman looks out. The viewer will never know the nature of her loss, nor the ending to her story. This study is about the moment of realisation in which this woman exchanges her recoil of thought for a desire to escape and search. She is sealed into a watertight vacuum, devoid of the soul which she has lost. The pressure of her three fingers pressed against the glass is the only small clue to her despair. She is captive in this space, yet resolute in her expression to find a way out. Her face is calm, yet the droplets of water may well symbolize the tears behind her composed demeanour. Her lustreous soft pink lips gently part to reveal pearls of a potentially devastating smile in happier times. Her soft grey wanderlust eyes remain focused in a steadfast skyward gaze at an object for which her right hand is poised to reach out, the identity of which remains a mystery to the viewer. One can only hope that she will unlock the route to her freedom and reunite with her lost soul.
