'm learning, I'm dreaming, and most importantly, I'm doing. That is what this month has been about so far. Doing the things I'm afraid of, doing the things I love, doing the things I thought I had no talent for. Today I shed those preconceptions that we all keep about ourselves - that seemingly constant question of "Am I good enough?" - and I let it walk quietly away. I created the story that wanted to be let out. I created it as beautifully as I could. I created with so much passion that I thought my heart might burst like the sun through the trees this morning, at 6:05am, when I was telling this story with all I had. I hope you enjoy the photo, video and blog post (especially the video). It was made with a lot of love.

The slightly longer youtube version is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GYgGPX5PEI&t=10s

These are all my own images that I made with the Bing Image Creator, powered by DALL-E 3. DALL-E 3 (as implemented by the Bing Image Creator) has gotten worse since these were made - it may be difficult or impossible to create images of this quality today.

The song in the video is my own original creation - it is NOT an AI generated song.

Many of the images in this video slideshow could not be achieved through real photography. Extreme micro photography (normally referred to as ‘macro photography’) creates an image with a very shallow depth of field, meaning that only a small sliver of the image will be in focus.

To compensate, a technique called 'focus stacking' is used, where numerous photos are taken with slightly different focus points, and computer software then merges the sharpest parts of the images together into one image. The process of taking these different photos for focus stacking takes some time, and so it will not work for moving objects, such as moving insects. A camera may need a shutter speed as fast as 1/500 of a second to sharply capture images such as this – but focus stacking may require 50+ shots to be taken at different focal points - without the subject moving.

The insects photographed with this technique are usually no longer alive, or at least they are keeping still for a long period of time. Only with AI is it possible to capture extreme close-up images of moving insects where more than a sliver of the image is in focus - with the realism level of a real photo. My goal with AI is to create images that would have been impossible to create without it.

LET'S GET TO WORK! by Fau Ferdinand, the March 2024 exhibition @ Nitroglobus main hall

Fau is an impulsive enthusiastic artist, unafraid to experiment with various mediums such as music, imaging, video, and design. Her artistic style defies categorization, as she continually evolves both her art and her avatar.

This exhibition features new works never before seen, offering viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in Fau's ever-changing artistic expression. Visitors are encouraged to take their time, absorb the multimedia presentations, and interpret the art in their own way. Fau believes in the fluidity of interpretation, recognizing that there is no right or wrong way to engage with art; it's an ongoing dialogue between the artist and the viewer.

Come and dive into Fau's world. I am sure you will enjoy.

Opening: Monday 11 March, 1 PM SLT

'Living in the Daily Flow of News', July 2017, 2'08mn

This short video can be seen as a reaction to our 'brave new world' filled with disconnected bits of information. Constantly updated news are overwhelming our daily life.

Edited on an iPad with LumaFusion

This is NOT an AI generated video. I made this with Blender, which is a free 3D art program. The music track in the video is my own original creation.

By making the animation from scratch, I had complete control over every element. The different textures on the rings and the shapes and texture of the spacecraft/plane were things I was able to control. The exact speed of the plane and the camera angles used were all things that I controlled as well. If I used AI to try and make something like this, I would have none of that fine-tuned control over the final product. The final product might look good, but it would not truly be my own vision brought to life.

The problem with AI, in my opinion, is not the fact that all the technical aspects of creating the image/video are handled by the AI model. The problem is that you are basically giving a robot a broad outline of what you want an art project to look like, and the robot is deciding all the details of it.

It is like hiring an artist to realize a vision you have, rather than actually bringing it to life yourself. You provide the broad outline, but the artist makes all the smaller level decisions. This can also be compared to a film director providing a composer with some guidance about a film score they want, rather than actually being the composer.

To get an idea of how 3D art is made (without AI) take a look at the famous donut Blender tutorial: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4haAdmHqGOw

Many of the things in the tutorial are more advanced that what is shown in the video I have uploaded here.

From a technical perspective this was not overly difficult to do, but from a creative perspective this is the most challenging video I have done yet. This was much more challenging than simply getting some good footage of a single subject and finding a song of mine that fit it well. It originally started out with just some test footage of a two layer video and it evolved from there. I think this is my best video so far.
