A view of what is now the Artisans building on the Illinois State Fair grounds in Springfield. Originally known as the Poultry Palace, this handsome structure is the second oldest building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

The Poultry Palace was built following a disastrous storm in 1895 that killed many of the State Fair's feathered entries which, up to that time, had been housed in sheds. After the calamity, State Fair Poultry Superintendent, and future Governor Len Small, was quoted as saying: “the loss of valuable fowls was considerable, and the necessity of a suitable building, obvious.”

Construction of the Poultry Palace began in 1896, and was completed in time for the 1897 Illinois State Fair. Now repurposed as the Artisans Building, every Illinois State Fair, the building is filled with displays of Illinois crafts. During the rest of the year, the facility is rented for private gatherings such as wedding receptions, meetings, and high school proms.

Laying the mosaic pavement requires backbreaking labor. It's an arduous job performed in a prostrate position, making this traditional art of calçeteiros both rare and expensive. When wet, the surfaces of "calçadas" tend to be slippery and can contribute to slips and falls. Also, the moisture breaks down the design requiring frequent maintenance. For this reason, today’s government is considering a way of creating a safer pavement for the pedestrian while at the same time maintaining the unique beauty of this art form as an important part of the nation's identity and heritage.

It is a humbling experience to witness the process of something that I unwittingly take for granted. It saddens me to think of the loss of life that occurs in a commercial industry. I take heart in the fact that nothing of the animal is wasted, but I can't help feeling a deep sense of sorrow here, despite the incredible artistry. A pricked conscience is a healthy reminder of the great gift that is life.

The great master of brocade

Kasbah, Marrakech, Morocco.

Taken in Takayama Japan at the Hida Folk Village where this lady was demonstrating an old folk-style of embroidery. Originally shot on transparency film. Probably Velvia but i don't remember!

She was very shy and didn't really look at me until said to her in Japanese, "Just a moment please." she rewarded me with this lovely little smile.

Another coffee shop, this one is Artisan Roast on Gibson Street in Glasgow. I've been meaning to visit as I've heard nothing but good things about the place, great coffee and atmosphere. I love drawing specialist coffee shops as there are so many different objects almost like an alchemists study with all the beakers measuring tools and filters. This one combines a bright and airy front half to a more mellow hanging out area in the back area.
