A new landscape is taking shape around us, made of artificial intelligence, advanced robotics and synthetic biology. Science may not completely comprehend this complex, elusive matter yet, but designers are already working with it anyway. How do they do it? How do they imagine a world that is constantly developing? How will the choices they make today impact the world of tomorrow, when they will be gone?
For Design Nonfiction, design studio Tellart interviewed over fifty internationally renowned designers about their profession and their views on the present, past and future of digital design. These conversations are collected at the designnonfiction.org website. To kick off the project, MU will show the first seven interviews and four thematic stories.
To make the dynamics of design more tangible for the audience, MU will also show Tellart’s Terraform; another landscape, made of sand, that lets you shape the world with the aid of machine intelligence. Technically, we can manipulate the earth—but do we actually want to?

Designing, planning, and building procedures have changed to satisfy modern and technological requirements. Technology has been used more often in construction to increase efficiency, quality, and safety. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the new digital transformation that has made its mark in recent years. Construction professionals have found value in AI to help manage manual labor and crucial assignments.
AI is a computer or computer-controlled robot's ability to perform tasks usually associated with human beings. For construction, AI can mean anything from computers that handle large amounts of data to data sensors on the job site and live robots that run physical labor tasks.
What is the current state of Artificial Intelligence in the construction industry, and what is its potential?
Artificial Intelligence: Construction's New Frontier
A study by McKinsey called artificial intelligence "construction technology's next frontier." The McKinsey study found that Artificial Intelligence hasn't gained enough traction in engineering and construction. These sectors need to adopt more AI applications and techniques to compete for more. The report comments, "We predict this effort will lead to allocating more resources to build the necessary capabilities so AI can play a more significant role in construction in the coming years."

The steady advancement of artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming our world with a host of emerging innovations such as self-driving cars, automated financial advisers, and expert medical systems. Developers are producing data-intensive computer systems designed to observe, learn, and solve complex problems faster and more accurately than their human counterparts. As these technologies become increasingly mainstream, they promise enormous public benefits including higher productivity, improved health and safety, and fairer decision making. While these technologies have incredible potential to generate economic and social good, these breakthroughs may not occur unless the public and private sectors work in partnership to promote the development and adoption of artificial intelligence, address new regulatory questions, and integrate the technology into agencies at all levels of government.
The Center for Data Innovation hosted a conversation with leading experts on the state of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the efforts by the public and private sectors to support related research and development, and the important policy steps that regulators and lawmakers should make to unlock these new opportunities.
