My kids are having a holiday this week, so it's quality time. What better place than to spend it at the zoo? I took this shot of this wonderful creature with my Powershot camera. It was taken at the zoo in Amsterdam, Artis.
Broghammerus reticulatus or Malayopython reticulata, Netted Python, once had a nice, short name. Back in 1801 it was first described under the name Boa, then later it was called a bit longer: Python. And in the first decade of our own century a dispute arose on whether to call it by the long Broghammerus reticulatus or Malayopython reticulata. The ARTIS zoo clearly chose the former name, after German reptile lover and expert on pythons, Stefan Broghammer. The 'reticulatus' is for its 'net-shaped' markings.
No! I didn't climb the fence of this Bird's enclosure to test its scientific name Chauna. Nor did I hear its screaming cries. Great Carolus Linnaeus calls it Parra chavaria, but he adds a note: according to Nicolas Jacquin (1727-1817) the Bird makes a crackling or groaning sound when you handle it. There are air cells between its skin and the muscles that emit groans when you touch. In any case, Johannes Carolus Illiger (1775-1813) in his official description (1811) changes the name of the genus to Chauna - derived from an ancient Greek word for spongy flesh - with reference to those air cells. Hence the 'groaning' of my title. In nature it screamingly cackles (but I haven't heard it).
In the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae (1758) great Linnaeus gave scientific binonial names to Butterflies (Papilio). He drew the specifics from six groups derived from Greek mythology virtually emptying out the list of possible names. Thus our Swallowtail was placed in the group Equites Achivi (=Greek Soldiers of the Trojan War). Demoleus was one of them; he was slain by Aeneas, important defender of Troy. It is unknown why Linnaeus chose that specific name for this Flier, as indeed the specifics for the 200 or so others that he identified.
The photo shows a male, which can be identified as such by the shape and color of the red tornal spots. Those of the females have a more blue border.

The poses are bento, created to fit a specific shape and that shape is included in the package. Also, poses are multipurpose, can be used from many angles and specially good as portrait poses.
The stairs are going to be in the demo area and you will be able to buy the whole package (prop with poses) or just single poses from the stand inside the booth.
