this was from the ferry that crosses Upper Arrow Lake. It's a 30 minute crossing but free.

I bet Owen has some shots of real arrows but I couldn't find any...

These brown signs with the oak leaves show directions to National Trust properties, this is one of our nearest ones. I did stop the car before I took the shot through the windscreen.

Here's a sign in Amsterdam with an arrow on it. But what does it mean? Look up? Go straight ahead? It looks pretty official.

The Red Arrows perform 'Tornado' at RIAT.

The Red Arrows, officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, is the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force, based at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire, UK (soon to be RAF Waddington). They were formed in late 1964 as an all-RAF team, replacing a number of unofficial teams that had been sponsored by RAF commands.

The Red Arrows badge shows the aircraft in their trademark diamond nine formation, with the motto Éclat, meaning "brilliance" or "excellence".

About two years ago it just happened that one arrow accurately landed into another one; distance of shooting was 30 yards.

This is another view of Arrow Valley on our way down from Crown Highway summit. Notice the switchbacks ahead that we successfully negotiated in spite of some pretty wild drivers ascending this narrow road at a dangerous pace.

Silverstone was originally a World War 2 RAF bomber station and, appropriately, on the day of the British Grand Prix each year it became the busiest airport in the UK, and on at least one occasion, in 1999, the busiest airport in the world. Recent changes to the circuit have meant that there is now no runway for aircraft, though helicopters are able to land there. When there was still a runway there the major historic car meetings used to attract a few aircraft visitors and there were flying displays, such as this one at the 1999 Coys International Historic Festival meeting when they had a visit from the Red Arrows, though it was a rather overcast day.

I took my wee iphone 4 up to Woodside to try out the pan function in the camera app. You have a little arrow that sits centre of a line and when you start to record and pan the camera, the arrow moves up and down.

The aim is to keep the arrow dead centre other wise you’ll have black un-drawn images at the top or bottom of the image. Plus if you go slow which is the best way to do it, its easer to keep a straight arrow.

The camera doesn’t perform well moving from dark to light or light to dark. These exstreme change in light contrasts result in wildly blowen out whites and a massive loss in detail. If the camera could alter while in record mode its “FIXED” exposure, this would be a cool tool. But saying that in normal light its pretty cool.

I took all these hand held and no doubt when using a tripod the results would be better.

All in all I never managed to complete the task since the battery ran out and that would never had happened if I was using a proper camera with spare batteries at hand. Then again for photo quality these phones up against a dedicated quality lens and full frame camera make the likes of the iphone nothing more than a toy, but a cool toy useful toy at that..

The Royal Air Force Red Arrows doing a spot of

winter practice

I'm a huge fan of the Red Arrows - and their display today at the Herne Bay airshow was as impressive as ever.

Flying with an almost clear blue sky as a backdrop, they painted pictures up high, and made us hold our breaths as they flew fast and low along the seafront.
